Just came back from hunt with my buddy who also happens to be a gunsmith and big time proponent of 6.5x47 Lapua in all its iterations (22-6.5x47 and 6-6.5x47, but 22-47 particularly). I shot a doe at 550 yards with his gun (22-6.5x47, 75 gr. Hornady Amax, 39gr RL22), my longest kill so far. I had my 6.5x55mm Tikka, but I never shot my gun beyond 200 yards, so once I finally saw group of deer near a thicket at the end of a day, I didn't want to take a chance. I am sure my Tikka is more than capable to hit deer in vitals at 550 yards and beyond, but his gun has elevation turret chart for up to 800 yards. Anyways it was one shot kill with 2 inch size entry and 1 inch size exit wound, both lungs turned into mush. He himself killed many deer with that bullet as far as 700 yards and says the wound to be just as impressive, if not more than one produced by his 180 gr bullet from 300 win magnum. I have to admit I didn't take his claims at a face value until today. He got two does at average distance of 400 yards before me today and one had a passing wound with obliterated shoulder bone. Amax did not fragment upon impact with bone, but produced devastating deep wound after that. I regularly shoot 75 gr Amax from my Savage BVSS in 22-250, but I could hardly imagine this little bullet could be so devastating. I think it is not only deadly but perfectly ethical on deer size game. All deer that were hit today never ran more that 20-30 yards. I think I am hooked up to this caliber/bullet. Unless I persuade him to sell me his gun, which is eyecandy with flame maple stock, I'll probably have him to build one for me
