perplexed over 6br load

I have a Savage 'fclass' 6br 8" twist factory rifle. According to "Loading the 6br for newb's" and other posts I've read here, a charge of 30grs of Varget under a 105 bullet is common. There are those that prefer more than 30. I can't even get close At 28grs I start getting a stiff bolt. At 29, the primer goes flat, the ejector leaves a mark, and the bolt is extremely stiff. The bullet was touching the lands in all of these test loads. I'm having trouble understanding what is causing the lack of ability of my gun to handle the heavier loads

Are you just touching the lands or are you seating bullet past hard jam and with >= .002" neck tension?

Varget seems to vary from lot to lot. I would run a ladder test thru your chrono. To see where the sweet spot is

Try RL 15 works in my Sav f class 6br , 30 gr of Varget was to hot in mine, RL 15 was also more accurate in mine for some reason, in my Krieger barrelled 6br the same amount of Varget hit 4-5 inches lower at 600 than RL 15 Neil

+1 on sdneil's post.

Definately work up the load if you're going to try R-15, you may not be able to make it to 29.5 or 30.0gr. Depends upon your rifle, brass, etc. Do you have any Win primers handy? WD

PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOUR RIFLE IS TELLING YOU......Not what people who load with a shovel say.......LT

That's what I'm doing. It looks like 27.2 to 27.4grs is the sweet spot. I actually have 2 rifles that are pressure sensitive. My dasher shows pressure signs early. Don't believe in shovels. They for diggin holes.

You might also try backing off the lands some, that will change the pressure spike(curve) I've been finding lately that my guns shoot just as good if not better when I'm off lands .02 or more :)
I have a Remington that will lock the bolt up with a mild load when jammed in the lands but that same load ejects effortlessly when I backed off .030 thousands and appears to shoot smaller holes on target ;)

my savage f -class sounds like yours. 30 gr varget and 107smk would shoot real good but would leave a slight ejector mark and really bark. 30gr chronoed 2885fps, 29.5 chronoed 2850. 29.0 and 29.6 look real good since I had the barrel chopped to 26" and had a m40a3 crown and chamber recut. Have not ran across the chrono yet in new configuration, but bet velocity isn't much lower then before.

Clearly you are not limited to Varget. While many people have success with Varget there are many many powders in the same burning range. Remember that all rifles are individuals and have thier own preferences. Your rifle just might not like that lot of Varget!

true that 2dogs h4895, r15 varget are all similar burn. BL-c2 is just a hair slower. Everyone raves about 8208 but in 4 different rifles of 3 calibers I could not get 8208 to perform worth a darn

RL15 is the usual diet for this rifle. Varget was touted as a more than plausable alternitive so I aquired a pound and did a ladder workup starting ten percent lower than suggested in "6br for Newbies". Got pressure signs long before getting to the 30gr stated there. My dasher does the same thing. Some have written of using 33-34gr of RL15 in a dasher. If I get close to that I have to chain the gun down and use a hydraulic jack to get the bolt open. In both rifles, a 105 vld Berger is used. I'm just touching the lands. Can't get the 105 to shoot in any othe position.

do you kick your shoulders back if so how much probably doesnt need over 1or 2th. also brass may need sizing at back of web my 2 cents varget does seem to vary more than rl15 in ,my brx good luck alan.
