Pelican 1750 Foam Inserts

I like my Pelican gun case for traveling; however, i don't like the idea of buying a different gun case for each gun i take as you have to cut the foam to fit your rifle. I plan on just having the foam inserts cut for a couple guns and I can just swap out the inserts depending on which rifle I happen to be taking with me.

Foam inserts blanks are $70 from Pelican......um for foam ya right. What's a good replacement foam to buy somewhere that is as thick as the pelican, because the foam bottom piece is roughly 4-5" thick. Something that won't break the bank. Think local hardware stores will have something close?

If you have a Jo-Ann Fabric store in your area, they sell foam padding. I reupholstered some furniture, and got sheets of foam pad about 4 or 5 inches thick. This was several years ago.

Check ebay, they have all different sizes and densities. You can get some big pieces real reasonable. Cut with an electric knife. Matt

Many different types of foam out there. Many are to "soft" to work well. I have bought several types. Do anyone know the type or density of the foam that comes in the pelican cases?

You can get foam of different densities, either plain, 'Pick-n-Pluck' or custom-cut to your specifications from places like this:

Personally, I agree with gstaylorg. After you see baggage gorillas sling your long gun case up on the conveyor (or better yet, drop it) you kind of stop being 'cheap' about what goes into your gun cases. And I do mean 'cheap' relative to what we spend on matches, travel, lodging, ammo, etc. One set of foam pretty much covers the entry for a local 3-day state/regional championship, not counting all the other costs.

I have travelled Africa twice with a Pelican, I put the rifle in a heavily padded case and remove a layer of foam from the Pelican case, I do not cut out the foam to match the rifle. I have found the the padded case and extra foam in the pelican wors well for me. If I need extra padding I use carpet pad cut to size to snug everything up.

Yeah, I thought I would do the same thing but I found it difficult to find any foam that was as good as the stuff Pelican uses. Since I just had one rifle that I wanted to swap out in the case I bought the Pelican foam. It just makes a great case. In the end, it's just money:)

Go to your local upholstering shop that does car or boat seats and the like. You can get various densities and thicknesses of closed cell foam from them (I have) cheaper than you'll find on-line (unless you buy BULK).

Hight density foam is rigid enough to make cutting simple some cases come with this as opposed to pluck foam. This foam is used in commercial packaging. We get aircraft parts packdd with this foam every day. Look for packaging companies for sheets.

LOVE my Kaizen foam inserts:

Cheap, no. But, it is made in layers and is very easy to create a perfect custom fit with different thickness and different places to match the rifle contour.

If this helps, Amazon now has the Pelican 1750 case foam inseert set for $56.99 including free shipping. It is actually listed as the 1751 insert set for that case.
