Patterson SPEC-1 "Primevil" Delivered to Robert Oates

For those interested in RFBR, history has just been made.

Robert Oates has picked up Jeff Patterson's first SPEC rifle.

All eyes will be on this rifle to see how it does in RFBR. That is a lot of pressure and it may take sometime before we really know the rifles capabilities.

Many of Calfee's SPEC rifles took awhile before they proved their mettle.

There has been so much hype around this build it will be hard to impress, but very easy for the naysayers to criticize.

Robert has quite a dilemma. Does he go out there and hit the bigtime matches, or does he sit back and get some bench time before he ventures out.

It is going to be interesting to watch.

Bill Calfee has already proclaimed the rifle a killer. If it doesn't win it is because Robert can't find ammo or can't shoot.

after a google. Jeff Patterson appears to be the gunsmith that builds them. Making Calfee the designer or salesman. Very high end quality and very picky about who they sell to.

Here's a link to Calfee's site from Jeff

i asked him last night if he was coming to the unlimited nats and his reply was if he could get off work maybe .... ammo seems to be an issue , like for alot of us .

SPEC rifle? Not sure what that is. Did Calfee build it or Jeff Patterson?
epc308,

Bill Calfee built the most successful rifles in Rimfire Benchrest (RFBR). The most valued of these rifles are called Calfee SPEC rifles. They are very special.
If you want more info on them go to this thread. http://benchrest.com/showthread.php?100575-Rimfire-Benchrest-rifles-(Calfee-SPEC-rifles)

Bill Calfee retired from gunsmithing some years back but he has trained and assisted others in the use of his methods of building "state of the art" RFBR rifles..

Jeff Patterson, one of Calfee's students/followers has started producing his own series of SPEC rifles in the same tradition.

Primevil is Jeff's first SPEC rifle delivered to a customer. Others have been ordered.

As better components come available these rifles will be updated to keep them "state of the art". So there is no one set of components used in every build. That said, you can just about bet the farm they will all include a Pin Around Spring (PAS) action.

Thanks Tony. I’ve heard of Bill Calfee, have his book, learned a few things from it that allowed me to get a couple problem child .22s up and running correctly. I knew of his successful rifles and pistols, but hadn’t heard of the SPEC rifles. The links provided some interesting reading. Thanks again, Richard

I would love to know how to order one of these rifles or get on the list. "very picky about who they sell to" ?

What's the criteria?

Your best bet would be to contact Jeff directly . I'm pretty sure he'd build one for most anybody. Sorry I don't have his contact info but if you poke around on Calfee's site you may find it there.

Tony,

Thank you for the explanation. As a Prone shooter I've seen the acronyms PAS and SAP used, but have never read a definition. So PAS would be like the old Walther KKM, where the spring fitted inside the pin?

Tim,

That is correct. The 52 Winchester also used the pin around spring method. The Turbo is kinda based on the 52 Winchester design. As opposed to the Remington 40X design that has a large spring around the outside of the firing pin.

I'm not sure who coined the terms PAS/SAP but it sure makes explaining the designs easier.

I have been searching for an explanation why PAS is better than (or supposed to be better) than the SAP design but have never been able to get one.
