Part Time Gunsmith Question

Hi guys, I’m in the process of getting my FFL to do gunsmithing.

For those that have/had an FFL as a side business, how did you handle actions and guns being delivered when you’re not at the shop?

I’m currently renting a shop from a buddy and I work full time Mon-Friday 7am-4:30pm. I will be working on weekends and after my day job through the week. I’ll essentially never be available during normal business hours. My buddy’s business is right next door, so someone could be at my shop when the delivery arrives, but it wouldn’t be me who holds the FFL. I don’t plan to sell guns or do transfers, I only want to chamber barrels, thread muzzles, glass bed, and build made to order rifles.

Thanks

Guns and actions have to be signed for. If you cannot be there your neighbor can sign for the delivery and then put the gun or action inside your business. Otherwise you have to post hours (you have to do that anyway to get a FFL) and they will try to deliver during those posted hours. If all this fails you must go pick them up at the UPS or Fed-Ex terminal.

You can add a separate mailing address to your license and have items shipped to it. There is no requirement you have everything shipped to your premises.

There also is no requirement the licensee sign for firearms. However, once firearms are received, be mindful of the time limitations to enter them into your bound book. Also, whoever signs for them should meet the requirements to possess, receive, ship, or transport firearms across state lines, i.e., not a felon.

Your state may have more specific requirements, I would check on that.

I have been an 07/02 for almost 20 years.

I’ve been a class 7 for 16 years as well and I have found no matter what you tell the shippers IE ups fedex usps they are going to do whatever they want.
I’ve had them leave firearms with neighbors, on the front porch, leaning against the mailbox post.
Signature they don’t want no stinkin signature they sign there little machine and drive away.

Not for FFL stuff, but w/ signature required deliveries I often re-route to a UPS drop off location. For around here that is a Dollar General or a local Ace Hardware where I can stop on my way home from work and pick it up/sign for it.

I used to do this (I am not a gunsmith). USPS I picked up at the PO. UPS and FedEx at local location. This was for anything expensive/fragile. Two benefits. No package thieves. If there is damage it is handled right there in front of the representative.

It was many years ago but I worked at a shop (not FFL) where one of my co-workers had a home based NFA class 3 license. Items were shipped to him at the shop during business hours. It was always UPS if I remember correctly.
