Parkerizing and threading

If you've already been Parkerizing, you've probably figured out that it's necessary to plug the muzzle and chamber before before blasting and then leave the plugs in during the Parkerizing. I've used the silicon plugs that Brownells sells, but they don't fit tight enough in most chambers. Tight-fitted wood plugs have worked out for me (in both ends). Closed cell foam plugs and foam ear plugs haven't. I used to just leave the bore open after blasting, and it never seemed to hurt anything, but I just didn't like it so I stopped. I have Parkerized barreled actions a few times, but it's important to neutralize any solution left in the receiver/barrel threads. A good long water rinse, dry, and then penetrating oil soak is the best I could come up with. I've never seen any white stuff bleed out, and have pulled a few back down after several months (or years). They looked good.

Jim, I've done a lot of mauser barrel parkerizing and rinse the barrel throughly after the bath and before wiping/soaking in displacement oil. I usually run a brush, brush patch through the barrel 20 or 30 times to make sure it is oil up well. Before shooting, I run several dry patches thru the barrel. First shot removes any parkerizing and 2nd shot for sure. Time to clean barrel after third shot. Just the way I do it .

Thanks again for the advise sirs.

I've bought all the necessary things to do the job, just needed a bit of experienced help on WHEN to parkerize.

Haven't done any parkerizing just yet but will in the next day or two. I have 5 barrels that I'm going to do........thanks for the wood plug advise. I had read that the rubber plugs didn't work well but didn't know what would.

I'll let you know how it all comes out when I'm done.

I use the tapered silicon rubber plugs sold by mcmaster carr they work great for me. i buy several different sizes and choose one that fit tightly in the bore of chamber. If im parking a barrel with a gas port I select one that fits the bore tightly and push it down the bore until it blocks the port. As to parking the threads I mask them off when abrasive blast, the park really doesnt "stick" to the unblasted surface.
