Pappas j&j slide question

I bought one recently. Some how lost the blue rubber washer anyone know where I could get a replacement. Or is it actually needed ? Thanks

I don't think they are needed. Any ring type rubber washer will do the job. Ace Hdwe, etc. Killoughs probably has them but shipping will cost $.

I think the closest match would be a cam and groove gasket for a 1 1/4 in coupling. I think the food-grade ones are blue but check on that. They would have a 1.36 ID and a 1.94 OD. McMasterCarr sells them. Or just get a 1 3/8 ID square or round profile O Ring in black from about anywhere. Grainger, Ace Hardware, Amazon

Please excuse a dumb question.

What is a Pappas j&j slide?

I did Google it, and I know it's for rimfire benchrest, and people like them.

it screws onto a tuner. They were made by the late James Pappas. He also turned the Harrel tuner on my rifle into a "wasp" configuration by turning down the middle of the tuner. That was to remove weight so the rifle could make a weight class. Theoretically, the slide allows the bullet to stabilize a bit more after exiting the rifling

At my skill level I am not sure I can tell much difference with or without. In this test the rifle shot a bit better without the tube when I put both groups into OnTarget for analysis and removed the obvious flyer. This was just one test and any difference could have easily been wind or me. More testing is needed

Yours shoots better with out the tube??

Just the little bit I have tested mine so far. On my main gun The only difference I have noticed is with the tube the bullet seems to be less effected by the wind. Could be just a coincidence I am no expert. On my other gun it definitely seems to tighten my groups up.

On that particular test it did. I don't think one test is enough to make a judgment. Twenty rounds each way, ask me again after a brick of ammo shot each way.

Here are the OnTarget composites without tube with the flyer deleted and with tube

Adding the slide to the tuner increases the weight ahead of the crown and changes the tune. Even if you have separate tuning points it will be difficult to quantify any differences even if you are shooting in a tunnel. Outside probably impossible.

I was thinking the same thing. Adding extra weight in front of the muzzle would have the same effect as moving the settings on the tuner outward.

You can definitely see the change in the average POI between the two targets but was it because of the wind or did I change the POA? I have no clue. I think all you can do is get the best tune you can for the ammo and setup then shoot the best you can.

Don’t no if this makes sense or not. But bare with me. I am a newbie to rimfires. But with the tube on seems like my groups are as good or slightly rounder then with just the tuner. But when I shoot a card for score seems like it’s better with out the tube but could maybe been wind or something else. Didn’t really make sense to me

well my main concern is at 100 yards.. when i had the Annie, with the Uptagraff tuner tube on it (15"), that rifle shot lights out at a 100 yards.. this is why i have considered trying one again.. i have tried the one that Stiller makes. i don't like that one at all..

Just a update I messaged Ms pappas. She got back to me today and told me it definitely needs the washer. Not sure why. But I am gonna try a regular oring first and see what happens before I spend $20 for the blue one she has.
