Paper targets keep blowing away

At our range, we have a wooden frame with cardboard glued on it. Lots of masking tape holds onto our targets. If there are minimal winds, the tape, and staples will work. 15mph+winds and targets blow away. Any suggestions?

The public range near me uses roofing felt paper stapled to the wood frame. Staples hold the paper targets in place on the felt, no sweat.

Paste the back if the wind is coming from the rear of the pits

Put painters tape on the wind side of the target. It'll help keep the wind from getting under the paper from that side and the painters tape won't tear up the cardboard backer. Duct tape would work, but it would tear up the cardboard taking it off.

These might work. Amazon or electrical supply house. They are designed to hold insulating blankets. All depends on the target size and how far from the edge. Not that expensive. Should last for quite awhile. I know I’ve got some that are probably 30-35 years old.

I use cardboard and large targets. Low power scope I’ll leave them face up, higher power I flip them over and use stick ons. Thumbtacks or push pins. I keep the cardboard in place by sandwiching it between two small fiberglass rods on ether side. 5 minutes and a hammer, can be set up anywhere.



Started using these for stick ons. They are stickier than stick on bulls, and cheaper in the long run. Different diameters is pretty handy.

ETA Furniture stores are full of large pieces of cardboard. Never paid for any yet, has all been free for the asking.

I have used nails that have a plastic washer to hold targets on windy days. Not sure what they are called but they are used to hold house wrap on.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a lady in Dupuyer, Montana. We were discussing tourism and I mentioned that our campsites were leased yearly and the trailers were left in place year round. Her question to me was, "How do they tie them down so they don't blow over?"
I told her, as difficult as it might be to believe, there are places where you don't have to tie things down. WH

I made my own target holders with hooks to hang on club frames. 1x3 boards with 12ga x 1" hooks sized to frames. Makes it easy to take targets home for evaluation. Use cardboard as the backer and staple targets to it.

All the rifle ranges I used have backers that are in poor to terrible condition and often unusable. Since the increase in AR activity, it has gotten worse. Therefore, I long ago developed a universal system to hang my rifle targets that will fit any target frame and it is independent of the club's backers. It's cheap, simple, and lasts forever. But most importantly, it works! You don't need any tape, glue, or staple guns!

It consists of two steel 3/4" wide strips bend to form a hook on one end. These hang on the club's backer frame. I use my own backer, a piece of cardboard clipped to the steel strips with two of those medium office supply black binder clips. I can move my backer to any height that is convenient for me. I attach the target to the cardboard backer with 4 small black binder clips, two on top, two on the bottom. I have never had the wind blow my target off the backer! Mine is several years old!


Instructions:
Purchase two 3/4" wide the steel strips at Home Depot or your local hardware. Cut them to a length that will provide the range of height that you may need to post your target. This is dictated by the height of the frames are your range. Bend the strips at one end to form a "hook" to fit over the club's thickness frame (top portion of the frame). Clip any size cardboard backer that is compatible with the size of your target to each strip at any height convenient for you. Attach your target with 4 binder clips, two on the top and two on the bottom.

My range uses 2x2(4 foot by 4 foot) wood frames with orange snow fence/clothes pin. The orange plastic fencing lasts quite awhile. I take my own cardboard and quick clamps and clamp to the top of the frame. Targets are taped or have adhesive backs. This is way easier to plum targets, less movement when windy.

We use sheets of Corroplast at our range. Staples and push pins work just fine.
