Pacific Tool and Gauge Charges $15.70 to ship a 20c screw

PS I don't need the screw. I need the reamer stops which are just slightly larger. I chose the screw to illustrate the ridiculous charges. I had a coin business for years and spent hours every night after I got the kids to bed shipping coins to coin collectors. Clearly I didn't charge enough for shipping. But here is a free tip for shippers, by far the cheapest way to ship 13 oz or less is USPS first class in a padded envelope or small box. About $2.

Someone should also tell boltfluter (paul). He isn't charging $13/package for material and labor.

Just to be clear my shipping is 6.80 for as many recoil lugs as I can get in the box. This is my actual shipping cost. My personal feeling is that the profit margin should be built into the product being sold, not by gouging on shipping and handling.:)

Don't know about the gun industry, but my other hobby, RC cars, I can order replacement parts after a wreck, from 3 to 5 dollars. Ships USPS they don't add too much for picking and packing

Well, I bit the bullet and bought a 6CM reamer with the bolt stops so that that the $18 shipping didn't sting so much. I figure the entire order may be close to 12 ounces. I got out some barrels and reamers thinking I would make sure I had all the bushings I needed. After an hour I decided I need 2 bushings. Looked them up on PTG site and they are now "special order" items so they will ship in 3-4 weeks and add another $17 shipping. So I passed. I can get them from Grizzly. As I said in the original post, I do buy from others whenever I can.

While I was working with reamer bushings I weighted the screw. 6.848 grains. I can see why they have to charge hefty shipping for that monster.

Also ordered some barrels from Southern Precision Rifles. Somebody needs to tell him that he can't afford to ship a barrel for $10.

These charges are what is calculated during online ordering? If so...give them a call and explain what is happening. The web software is what is calculating the shipping...if it's not coded correctly for the item being ordered...then you get what you get. Advise them so they can look at the e-commerce software so it calculates properly. Call them...

I called them a few months or perhaps a year ago on another order. At that time they had a discussion of shipping charges that said lightweight items would be shipped first class for a reasonable fee but that wasn't offered by the software. I called and asked about it and was told that they discontinued that service and the charges were what was calculated on the website. End of story.

Or, if you don't like the cost of shipping, you can always jump in the car/truck and go pick it up at the will call counter.;)
That should save you a BUNCH of money.
That's a great solution. Why didn't we think of that. Always someone defending what's just not right.

Flat rate shipping boxes start at 6.00. Alot of screws fit in one of them. Wow, that was difficult to figure out. Na, let's drive out to Oregon and get them since that flat rate box isn't an option. Let's wake up guys. This shipping thing is BS. Someone's defending it ? I've shipped many items in those flat rate boxes. 500 bullets for 6.00!!! What's the weight of 500 - 30 Cal 185 vlds ? 6.00 !!! Let's not just beat up on PT&G. It's many, many more places than just them.

What does it cost to ship an empty flat rate box?

I sold some stuff on ebay and offered free priority mail shipping. The box weighed more than the item sold, still the same price. Ebay does offer a discount over the standard USPS internet rate.[/QUOTE]

The reason I chose PTG to beat up because is $18 is ridiculous. The actual item I was buying was a bolt stop that weighs about 1/4 oz. I can ship it for $2. I'm not saying I expect $2 shipping. Butch says he charges $7. That's fine with me. Many sellers prefer boxes over padded envelopes. So it costs a bit more. They don't take time to figure it up for every package. I get that. I have a lot of experience shipping on ebay. I sold over 15,000 items in a 3 year period. If I'd added $5 per for shipping that would be $75,000...but I digress. Just keep it reasonable.

If PTG had been $9 I'd have said to myself, "That's a bit more than most but OK." and never started a thread. But when my $21 bolt stop costs almost $38 including shipping, I'm looking for other options....

Unfortunately, nobody said, "Hey, why don't you buy your bolt stops from...."

So again, nobody expects shippers to charge actual shipping to the penny. Just keep it reasonable. 99.9% of the sellers do.

Merry Christmas,
Jerry

Jerry, Check my post again. I charge $5 not $7. Now for padded envelope at any of the three post offices that I use they say $2.70 is minimum. Business is business. If you have a large enough mark up on your product freeshipping???, is fine.
I think you need to search the threads that have beat this to death in the past.

No I don't blame you. I'm just stating that they are one of many that charge very ridiculous rates. They will all justify it by giving you a blanket reason but in reality going to the PO and picking up say a months worth of orders that fit it in those box sizes would satisfy alot of their customers. Then add that 6.00 to the order and call it free shipping. Simple.

I can imagine that the last thing a company thinks about is shipping rates( within reason). They only want the fastest process for their business without hassle. It's a two sided deal. I guess it just makes us all shop a bit more for better service.

Butch,
Sorry to inflate your shipping charges. You are one of the good guys.

I'm gonna take your hint and let this dead horse rot. --Jerry

I can't believe someone would buy something and not know the cost. Larry

carlsbad,
With a little fore thought-

You could have bought 1 hundred of these screws 40yrs ago for 1-2 cents apiece.
Sold them in today's market for 25 cents apiece.
Shipped them USPS Pri/Flat Rate for $6.80 apiece.

Your panties wouldn't be in a knot over trivial BS.
You wouldn't have to "Make Things".
You'd be a Flea Bay entrepreneur in short order!

cry to the moderators if it will make you feel like a man.......again!

Had a customer complain about shipping, said next time someone should use some common sense and ship it through the Post Office. Since we were the manufacturer he ordered again, we boxed their order up, I clicked the stopwatch and sent Danny to the Post Office, clicked again when he got back. Figured wages, gas and shipping. We were 50 minutes from the Post Office. He apologized. Shipping costs are way higher than they used to be, I actually apologized myself for a while after UPS started adding the fuel screwcharge.
