Pac-Nor or Douglas XX?

I bought my first Pac-Nor, 8twst, 6mm bbl for my .243 in April this year. They were great to deal with. A gal named Penny was the person that helped me. They were fast and relatively cheap. I bought the bbl chambered and threaded for a Savage for around $345.00. The bbl shoots sub-moa at 600 and 1K and is very easy to clean. It now has over 1300 rounds down the tube and still shoot great.

You can buy a lemon from any of the bbl makers, every now and then you are going to get a bad one.

I think he simply shot it until it was shot out at 1k and didn't bother sending it back...the Broughton.

He will never shoot them again however. He goes through at least one barrel a year. So back to what he trusts.

A buddy of mine had a Shilen and it was a lemon. HE actually got them to give him his money back minus smith costs. I think he worked for like a month and played phone tag with Shilen.

I haven't seen him in a few months, but I think he was going to go with Pac-nor or Lothar Walther since its a Savage 10.

BTW he finally got McMillan Stock on it and is happier than a pig in Shet compared to his BC duramax he had on it. Of course the stock an A-5 costs more than the rifle did.

One should pick a mnufacturer and stick with it. If your smith prefers a certain brand, go with it. Hopping from one barrel brand to the next each time you rebarrel or build a new gun, will give you less of a chance of getting a great barrel. Also, it will rob you of the opportunity to compare multiple barrels from the same company. Establishing a baseline for accuracy of your loading and shooting practices can be done easily with barrels of the same brand. It will make spotting a bad barrel easier and also make returning one easier. Knowing the exact barrel dimmensions of a hummer gives you a much greater possibility of getting another one. Tim North of Broughton, can tell you this information about any barrel that he has made. Detailed record keeping goes a long way towards producing consistancy.

I have a Douglas 1:10 on my single shot Savage in a .243 A.I. that shoots excellent. This barrel has over 1500 hot loads through it with some throat erosion but no loss of accuracy. I have another Douglas 1:10 to screw on when this barrel dies as well as several Pac-Nors. Haven't shot the Pac-Nors yet so I can't comment but they are a good company to deal with. Don't think that Douglas is an inferior barrel. I would recommend Douglas to anyone looking to build an accurate live varmint rig.

I had Pac Nor rebarrel my 700 Varminter with their SS Select Match Grade barrel in a 1-12 twist chambered for a no turn 6mm BR. This gun will shoot half dime size groups using 55 Sierra Blitz Kings, and 58 and 65 grain V-Max bullets in front of 34 grains of Varget. I don't think a varmint hunter can want anything much better.
