P-dogs & 6x45 build.

After putting its first rounds through it Sunday to sight it in and getting nice, small groups I went out to one of the ranches I shoot on and layed out a little over 100 p-dogs today.
All I can say is wow, this is going to be a sweet affair!
My build is nothing to write home about, but the McGowan bbl is better than I actually expected BUT hoped it would be.
All were taken with the 65g vmax with AA2015 behind it, just a tad over 3000 fps. Accurate as it should be. I can also say it will pop a p-dog to 450 yards & it does not wind drift like my .223 using a 50g vmax at 3400 FPS. Wind was steady at 15-17 mph, but I shot with it or into it mostly today.
I built it just for cototes and Antelope and a 300 yard max range on them out here and had to get some rounds through it shooting steady & no cleaning till I got it home.
Lots of ready to eat coyote food left today.

Sounds like a good day at the range and the ranch! What's all the specs of your rig? Do you have any pictures of it? Have fun with it and enjoy! I hope to git out this weekend and lay the crosshair down on some groundhogs ;D

Its nothing to write home about, But man does it shoot & still under $500 in it.
Original stock, McGowan 24" ss select bbl, 1/10" twist, NSS fat lug, new large bolt, new SS bolt head & baffle, Rifle Basix Savage # 2 trigger & my 20 yr old BSA platnum target 6-24x44 scope.
I know I will have to spray it black as even with the matte finnish its still to bright out in the fields. I need to have it blend in like before.
This was a 380 yard hit.

5spd,

Thanks for the report. That looks like an awesome rig! Good shooting! You're getting me excited to head out west in a couple months.

thanks,
Jason

Looks like you had great fun. Nice to read your McGowan worked well. I gave up on mine in a 6 Dasher bench gun. Barrel is coming off to be replaced by a Keieger. My McGowan would not shoot.

Thanks again for the help on hunting those dogs. I ordered a BLM map of where you told me to go. Now it's up to the fuel costs and hauling my big toy-hauler trailer.

Keep having fun.

Shot a 6x45 myself for a few years.

Would recommend the Hornady 87gr Vmax or even HPBT for the antelope, it'll open up nicely at the reduced velocities. Harder bullets tend to give serious runners when the lungs are hit. I used the SIerra 65gr GK with success as well, but I had a few bullets splinter.

I got my 87vmax today in my order. With the 65vmax, 70gr NBT, 85gSGK HP and 95g NBT hunting Ive been able to get .500" with them all. I do like the 85 SGK and 95g nosler BT hunting bullet for Antelope though. All those loads will punch a hole through 1/8" steel at 300yds also.

Hope you'll be happy with it, I had great fun with the 6x45.

Was a typo above, it's of couse the Sierra 85 gr Gameking I used.

No typo, I cut off part of the target when I copied it with the bullet which for that target wich is the 95 nosler hunting BT bullet. I had to add it with my edit junk.
The 85 sgk jp shoots just as good under 3/4" also.

I've got a 6x45 in an custom AR-15. Really a neat little cartridge. Lot of people prolly think at first it's a waist putting a 6mm pill on a little 223 case. However, it actually pretty dang efficient. You can get the same weight bullet about 100+fps faster than same in 223. Plus the BC is usually better in the 6mm offering. I realize this is not always the case but check the BC on varmint bullets (look at Nosler .224 55gr v/s Nosler .243 in 55gr seems crazy) plus try to find a varmint bullet for .224 over 60gr.

I would really like to have a nice bolt gun in 6x45.
