Overpriced?

This is about twice my budget, I was curious if it was really worth that much.

I read a long time ago that a man has three major relationships in his life. The first will be like his mother. The second will be a bimbo. The third will be his best friend.

That's kind of where I am with lathes.
My first was brand new and made in China.
The second was a 1949 Heavy 10 that looked like it hadn't been cleaned since 1950. I took it apart down to the last nut and washer, cleaned everything, completlely rewired from the motor out, new felts and evrything adjusted per spec. Sold it for $600 more than I had in it, probably made $3/hr on my time but it was a lot of fun!

Now I'm looking for my best friend.

Sounds like you sold your best friend for $600 profit!!

I’d jump on that with the tooling if the ways were good. The variable speed drive can be bypassed using a VFD if it’s shot.

No Dave it cannot be bypassed as the variable speed on the Clausing is hydraulic operated and varies the diameter of the lower pulley. It is much like a snow machine or CVT drive. The VFD works well as a 3 phase convertor.

Ok , I’d still buy it. I’ve read a couple of threads on rebuilding those and although it looks like a pita it’s doable.

As South Bend Lathe has long been out of business it really deserves to be in a museum. It has lots of the additional tooling SBL offered for it and it is in factory new condition. Several years ago Casey Long of Long Machine Tool in Ferris, Texas had a 9" still in packing grease and new. It had sat in a man's garage for many years and Casey got it. He wanted around that price for it. I have no idea if he ever sold it. He's gone now and his son runs the place. Ray is pretty high on everything but if you need something it's a seller's market.

Casey was a fine old fellow and we lost a lot of machine knowledge when he passed.

It wouldn't be my cup of tea but they are well represented. They were prolific and many small shops and hobbyists had them.

Apples and oranges I know but this can be had for less than 3 grand. Collets and 6 or 7 chucks plus a steady. Deals are out there just gotta be patient

Good price if it's in good shape. I paid more than that for mine. I see a travadial on there too. If this would have been a month ago, I probably would have bought it.

Could sell the chucks and make a good chunk of your money back.
