over heating barrel

Is there any rule of thumb or dependable method for being able to tell how many rounds you can shoot or when you should stop shooting to not cause overheating damage to the barrel. Specifically for 300 rum but thinking about overall in general for any 30 cal round.
In other words how many times can i miss before i let her cool down??? lol!

I would say 3-5 rounds would be the very max for a 300 RUM depending on the barrel diameter.

If you can't hold the gun by the barrel 4-8" in front of the action after 3 shots then thats to many.

I was always told that if you can't comfortably lay your hand on the barrel and keep it there its to hot to shoot.

Shoot at 200yds and see how many rds it takes to make the barrel walk.

Some barrels can hold their accuracy when they are very hot. Others will walk soon after they warm up,ie factory barrels).

There is only one way to find out.

To monitor this, go to your welding shop and ask for tempilac stick on temp guages. They look just like the colour coded strip thermometers you find on fish tanks. They just read at higher temps and there are several ranges.

By watching the target and the temp the barrel reads, you can stay within the accurate range for that pipe. Do give the barrel 10 to 15 secs to heat up and register on the temp strip.
