Outta Varget Blues

Almost out of Varget and a new to me FTR rifle on the way . What's another good powder for 185 Juggs in a 308 ?

In addition to Varget, Berger lists H4895, IMR-4064, AA-2460, Ramshot TAC, IMR-4895, Norma 203B, RL-15, RL-17, H414, N550, and Win 760.

Let's see, during the Obummer years (09) to be precise I changed over to H4895 and have been very happy ever since.

My Son just finished testing Shooters World Precision Rifle, he's used Varget with 88s for our local 1000 yard matches and he's found it to be equal to Varget as far as velocity and accuracy. Nice to have options. I used 8208 with 75s and it was literally one hole at 100 yards but accuracy fell apart somewhere slightly beyond 700 and before 900 yards. At 700 it was still great. We don't have another target between 711 and 900 so I couldn't be sure where it lost stability.

Haven't tried 8208 with the 88s yet.

IMR4064 is what I use when the Varget is running low or non-existent. Luckily I still have a few pounds left......But I'll keep using the 4064.....my Browning X-Bolt 308 loves that powder

N150 is the default powder for 185-200s in 308 SP brass in UK F/TR. (Will stress the small primer factor.) Stout loads that see 30-inch barrels produce 2,825-2,850 fps in suitably throated chambers. Note though, we don't have to worry about ambient temperatures in the 90s and their effects on pressures. (Rumour has it that N150 is one of Viht's powders recently reformulated to improve temperature stability.)

I gave up on varget around the Obama era and switched to 4064 with 168s and 175s. Never looked back. Gets me the velocity I am looking for and 44.5 grains of 4064 with 168s is 1/2 moa out to 600 yards for me.
