outside case deburring tool - center pin?

What is the purpose of the pin that protrudes from the center of an outside de-burring tool? Is it a vestige of the manufacturing process...............

You can chuck it up in a drill press or electric drill with that pin. And it can be removed in case you want to machine up a pilot to fit your cases.

I have often wanted to take this out and put a bigger one in the same size as the neck to keep the case centered

Yes I have a Redding VLD inside chamfer like the one pictured only one ended no outside chamfer debur cutter. I have the tools to probably modify one but too many other jobs in the line in front of that one. :) seems to be a never ending line with always something taking priority over the others.

Why pull it out, make different OD bushings to fit over the pin that fit different calibers. Work smarter, not harder.

I had always assumed it was there to prevent the case from being caught up in one flute and twisting sideways and causing damage.

Not all have the pin. Forster on left,
Cabelas on the right.

Thanks everyone for your input, you would think that at least one manufacturer would have mentioned the purpose of this pin on their packaging! I also had the idea of making bushings to assist with aligning the case evenly to all sides of the cutting edges.

If you go this route, count me in for a set!
