OUCH!!!

And this is what caused the problem. They left the bore sighter in the barrel when they fired the rifle.

Why do people use those things anyway??
I've always done it the old fashion way, by looking through the bore. Even on an AR with the upper off.
Gets on paper at 50, then in the X after a few shots, then out to 100.

Hope the person was not hurt.

I used a luepold sight that is held magneticly to the front of the barrel it took a while to git use to it. I also used the old method of looking thru the bore for a little while.

I've never used a bore sighter anywhere near a Range or Firing point, there I use the method that's already be mentioned......for my own rifles it's done in the cradle at home without a bolt or ammo near the rifle.

My question is where was the RSO when this happened?

Some people shouldn't use firearms........

That's from back in 07`,
And the guy wasn't so lucky.
He caught a face full of schrapnel an powder burns, and was hauled out on a stretcher. I have the photo series but it's really kinda graphic and poor becasue the stretcher was moving when they took the pic of his face.

Only use my boresighter at home.

Saw a similar incident a few years ago. Guy built a blackpowder pistol from a kit. First time at the range he was so excited he left the ramrod in the bore after loading it. Upon pulling the trigger the pistol immediately rekitted itself. Not a scratch on the shooter (he was wearing a glove) but parts and pieces of pistol all over the firing point. Never did find the ramrod.

The guy was still shaking a month later.

Geeze, I hope nobody got really hurt over that. Its amazing with that thing on their it was over looked and you know it can happen to anyone with or without experiance. Now thats what i call a bananna peal.

I saw a guy shoot a ram rod out of a TC black powder rifle.
It didn't do anything. The ram rod was in three pieces. It thumped he's shoulder pretty good.

Another "tool" that can cause this kind of catastophic damage is a "drop rod" ....those 6" brass rods (Sinclair offers them) used to dis-lodge bullets stuck in the throat area.

I have a laser boresighter but I don't use it for that. I boresight like the rest of you, looking through the bore.
I do use it when setting up the chrono screens. It's fast and sure. Since I'm looking at the dot on my hand it's fresh in my mind that the sighter is in the bore. So, as soon as the screens are positioned the next step is removing the sighter.

Problems start when your doing things like that and someone's talking to you. It takes your mind off what your doing. That's what happened to the guy that shot his ramrod out of the barrel. There were 4 of us talking to him as he was loading. He stopped what he was doing to answer a guy. He then put on a cap and fired. I won't reload with someone in the shop with me for the same reason.
