Otter in the pond

We are close to flooding up here on the mountain, creeks are running hard and pond is close to going over the dam. Guess this guy likes it extra wet, he showed up a couple days ago. Did same thing last winter when the creeks got high, stayed a few days and left. Hope he doesn’t wear his welcome out this time. BA03489C-5877-4979-B45B-451B2659CDB2.jpeg
 
Of all the animals that have an os penis, an otter has the largest compared to body size.
 
I have a “Vudoo” necklace with all sorts of stuff on it. Turkey spurs, alligator teeth, bear claws, fish head rocks and os penis from several animals such as coyote, coon, bear and otter. Only thing that comes close is a walrus.

We get otters in our pond in WV on occasion. They play hell with the fish.

Unfortunately, you are only allowed to trap one per year up there.
 
When I was a kid, I was fishing the Palouse River, in Idaho, and not doing real well. I was fishing a spot which looked good but seemed to be fishless. I was about to move on when an otter popped up, about ten feet in front of me, with a 14 inch trout in his mouth. My impression was that he was smirking. WH
 
A friend of mine is a state fisheries biologist. He told me on more than one occasion that most small lakes and ponds are underfished. I get an otter once every few years and it stays for a few weeks and then disappears. The only difference I see is that the fish I catch the following summer appear larger. Not as many fish, but more space and more food for the survivors. It beats catching a bucket full of 4 inch bluegills anytime.

Last summer I stocked some 2-3 pound bass but I doubt that they can control the bluegill population. I need a few more hungry otters. :D

This one ( I guess it’s same one) came this time last year. Stayed until the heavy flooding rains stopped and then he left. I’ll watch closely to see if this one stays or leaves. My front porch is about 50 yards from pond so I have a great view.
