other powders

i have a savage 223 LRPV with a 7 twist, I only can get my hands on 80 amaxes at the moment, so far i have tried varget and rl-15& h4895 around 24 grs and accuracy is not what i call good, i do have some bergers 80.5 gr and 80 SMKs coming, what are other powder choices to try in the meantime, maybe this bullet just don't work, i have other powders around, what's worth a try before i give up on these 80 amax bullet.

From Western Loading Data:
AA2200

80 SIERRA HPBT MK Start:18.8 grns. 2,414 fps. MAX.: 20.9 grns. 2,641 fps. 54,454 psi.

Never tried that heavy of a bullet in .223, but AA2200 works great with 50-55 grain bullets in my rifles.

I use TAC in a lighter bullet than you. Just be careful their load data can be hot , start low and work up...

AR-Comp might be worth a try. Similar to H4895. I've had good luck with 70 and 75 grain bullets with it.

AA2200 is too fast for heavy 223. It shines with lighter bullets in everything I've tried outside of the 6.8. 55-65gr bullets in the 6x45, 40-55 with the 223.

I agree AR Comp would be a great choice, as well as the other powders listed.

I'd be looking very carefully at optimizing seating depth, rather than changing powders. Varget and/or H4895 should both work well. However, the 80 A-Max is a secant ogive bullet, and might be very picky with regard to seating depth. If you haven't done it already and it is possible with your rifle's freebore, I'd test from about .010" into the lands to about .030" off the lands, starting with .005" increments.

What's your COL? Should shoot jammed with Varget or you got a turd...JMHO
the 80 amax COL is right at 2.500, just loaded 5 at 2.520 light neck tension, another thing i want to add, is i have M pro 7 and KG 12 copper removers, i thought they were good, till i picked up a bottle of Boretech
CU 2 just afternoon, i am getting green patches like no end. this may be part of the accuracy issue, dam that is good stuff.

A simple test I’ve found with every fast twist 223 I’ve ever owned. If it will not shoot sub MOA with 24.3-24.5gr of Varget behind a 80gr SMK seated .010-0.020” off the lands then you need a new barrel. I would change Bullets before I changed powder as you’ve tried multiple powders known to produce accuracy in this cartridge.

the bullets will be here tomorrow, 80smk, berger 80.5 and 80 ELD

Guess I might get flamed... I would suggest you try a max load of CFE-223. I shoot it with 80 grain Sierra MKs and it will stay under 1/2” at 100 from my trainer with a 26” Hawkhill 7.5 twist barrel. My magazine allows me to run them longer than AR length and I used a PT&G 5.56 Match reamer. I would imagine that this powder won’t get you th SDs that Varget or H-4895 will, but it will get you more velocity. To the tune of 8.4 MILs to 1000 yards. It’s sure fun on steel, what with cheap loading, nearly no recoil, and extended barrel life. I’m going to build one for my son to shoot.

Good Luck,

Wayne
