Other neck turning questions

I have read some of the neck turning postings here. I gather that I will need to expand the necks before actual neck turning, correct? If so, would this be an example of what I need to use to do it, in the case of .223 .22-250, etc.?

I have seen some examples of using a mini lathe to turn necks on YouTube. Since I have one, I would eventually like to try turning that way. I will have to figure this out step by step. Once I get the expanding part figured out, I can figure out the exact lathe setup to use, and then, the actual turning procedure.

Thanks for any help,

Danny

Use the expander mandrel made for your turning tool. You can call john at 21st century or pat at pma tool and theyll get you what you need. Then id get a case driver for a drill or whatever and chuck it up then run the turning tool on by hand. If you can find a video on the benchrite case lathe youll see how its done. You may find you want that instead of your mini lathe- lots easier to deal with and store, more room to not twist you up too

In case it's not obvious, unless they are virgin unfired, you need to full length size the cases before expanding the necks. (Using a simple, solid FL die, not a neck bushing die. You need a proper neck-to-shoulder transition.)

Thanks for the help on that. After you:
A: Full Length Size
B: Expand the necks
C: Turn the necks

What comes next? Resizing, because the necks were expanded, or just loading and firing?

I am going to read what I can in Tony Boyer's book right now.

Thanks,

Danny

I do step A, step C and then clean the cases and load them up. Regards JCS

Best to just expand new/unfired necks with an expander mandrel that not only matches the turning mandrel but leaves necks at ready to load interference fit(ex; Sinclair, PMA,, not K&M). Then turn, load, fire form.

Pumkin can be added to the 'ready to load' list.
