Origional Remington 03/A4

I have an opportunity to purchase a Remington 03/A4. We had an expert look it over and verify it's all real. It's an arsenal rebuilt rifle with a Korean war era scope on it. I know it would be worth more if it was in it's original condition but it is what it is. I have first crack at it. I'm waiting for the expert to give us a value but there will be a certain amount of subjectivity there. Does anyone here on the board know the current general range of prices they're going for?

Do you have pictures? A4's are difficult to fake due to the way the serial number and nomenclature is offset on the receiver. There are very few examples that have not made at least 1 trip back to the armory. The original scope would have been a Weaver 330c, another resource is www.jouster.com . The 03/03-a3/a4 forum, very many knowledgeable guys over there. I bought mine a few years back without a scope and paid $1500,which was not a steal but not a bad bargain. Average in good condition seems to be around $3000 depending on originality. Jim

Unfortunately everything about an A4 raises a red flag :-) But when one pops up its worth taking a hard look at. There is a ton of paperwork in the estate it came out of and I'm hoping we will come across either DCM or CMP paperwork for the rifle. That would help a lot!

Maybe I am missing something, but what about an A4 is it that "everything about it" raises red flags?

How does one fake a A4 receiver?
I am curious about that also, since I've been under the impression that the A4 is just about impossible to fake. Yes, it can be assembled from correct parts that weren't original, but the receiver markings were unique and short of welding over and re-engraving I don't see it. The bolt is not easily faked either as it was specifically forged to shape, and a cut and weld usually can be detected. Jim

Exactly. Pretty hard to fake a receiver. Bolts maybe but not easy and probably not worth the effort. Scopes about the same. And original finish isn't the easiest to fake either. Compared to M1D's, A4s are much tougher to fake, if they are truly "faked" vs rebuilds or put together with other than original parts. Truly minty originals are tough to find as most probably saw a rebuild or two. Just another rifle that the more time u spend messing with them the more likely u can tell legit from not so legit.

I've seen pictures/discussions of them where it was thought that somebody is laser etching the receiver to make it look like an A4.

I can say for sure there are many parts 03-A4's out and about.
In the 80s' &90's there was a Man from Il. moved to Mich. that was a Big US Military Gun and Parts Man.
He worked all the Big Gun Shows
He would A4's etc. from time to time. He also had the right parts New and refinished to build almost any 03 style Rifle.

He is no longer with us . Is inventory was sold .

Good luck , a4 s are very nice to add to any collection , almost all can be traced by the ser # . No engraving , laser anything is going to remove the original roll stamping . They may be able to offset the stamp but eliminating the orig is hard . I'm curious what scope was on it for the rebuild .
Check the mount it should only have 1 screw on the receiver ring and one in the back , in the rear sight area . Rings should be vertical split if the 3/4 weaver , I've seen some 7/8 vert also . A Israeli modified ? hade redfield 1" vert split rings with a old 1" weaver . Of course that was never confirmed as a U.S. rebuild .
