Optimum Bullet weight for 1 in 11 308.

With a 1 in 11 twist 24in 308 barrel which bullet weight would suit for long range shooting, I tried the lapua 155g scenars but found results inconsistant, The 185g scenars were an improvement so i am thinking that the heavier 180+ weight bullets might be optimum for 600-1k shooting with a 24in 1 in 11 twist 308.

Paul, the 190 Sierra, the new 185 Berger or the 185 Lapua will all serve you very well at 600 yards. If you can find some, the Lapua D46 185 FMJ is a terrific match bullet too.

Powder choice should be along the lines of 4064 or Varget for burn rate. I would recommend the lightest brass you can find, which is usually Winchester and a mild primer like the Wolf or CCI BR2. Don't go crazy trying to get the last fps out of it, the high BC bullets will do the job for you all the way downrange without a need for entering the pressure danger zone.

Thanks for info GermanS1, The rifle in question is a Blaser LRS2 match 308, I will try the 185g Berger molly VLDs with vit n550,Lapua brass and cci br, Thease components gave good results with the lapua 185 scenar but the berger vlds fly in my 243 blaser lrs2 rifle.

Hi,

What German said.

In my Blaser 1/11 I get the best results at 500 meters with heavier bullets like the Sierra 190's, Lapua 185 Scenars and Berger 185VLD's.

Chrs,

Here's what has proven to be a consistent .5 MOA load in my Seekins Havak PH1 1-11.25" twist. I've only had the opportunity to use this load twice on a 800 yard KD range, but I've shot it multiple times at 500 and never been disappointed. 168 MK over 44.6gr of IMR 4064, in Hornady brass with Fed210's. OAL 2.800. Prior to a planned hunt last year, I substituted 168 Berger Classic Hunters with equally impressive results out to three hundred yards.

As a old Palma Shooter !
155 Berger HB jumped .025-.030 at 3000 Vol.
45.5 to 46.5 gr. of Varget + or - start low your Barrel is short.

175 Sierra Tipped Match Kings work to 1000 yards at 2750 ?

Sierra 175 TMK or HPBT. Try working up 3 loads of powder (Varget) charges and compare shot groups at 100 yards. You should see a difference between loads and you will then have discovered what load shoots best in your rifle. that same load might be all over the place in mine. More powder is not necessarily the answer and can actually be a problem.

Your barrel is a bit short for long range. Both the 155’s and 185’s will perform with that twist rate but you are not likely to get the MV for optimum results. There is a wealth of information at www.long-range.com. I have used both the 155 Sierra 2156 and Berger 185 Juggernaut in Palma competition. My own preference is for the lighter bullet pushed to about 3079 FPS . The heavier bullet beats me up and makes good follow through more difficult. Barrels in the 30-32 inch length are more typical for. LR.

My real preference is the 223 Rem with the Berger 85.5–great accuracy and pleasant to shoot

With respect:
Why don't you do the math? Twist is based on length not weight even though they do often go hand in hand. (Example- Cutting Edge Bullets). Look up the length of the bullet, calculate your SG, what is your altitude? (it will affect the stability) and what is your application? Before everyone tells you what works for them do some math and find out what can or will work with what YOU have and what YOUR application/goals will be. If you need help PM me.

I had a 308 M70 match rifle I shot for a long time that had a 28", 1:11", 5R Obermeyer barrel on it. Only reason it was a 1:11" is that was all that was available when I needed one. It shot SMK 155 Palma's and Berger 185 VLD's amazingly well. All with Varget.
