Optical Cod-Locks

Occasionally something comes along and you say to yourself , "Why didn't I think of that!" If your rifle has a piccatinny rail read no further, but for those of us who have regular rings and bases this is the best piece of shooting insurance you can buy.

Last year I fought with keeping my scope rings from slipping on my bases. At a match in Riverbend Ga I started getting crazy shots. Mark Roper was shooting beside me and said, "little buddy your scopes about to fall off!" Dammit! I had just tightened it the day before for the same reason.

There are other ways to fix the problem! I went with the nuclear option of JB Weld. Not optimal if you prefer to remove your scope before changing barrels. You can also go with double screw scope rings if you can handle the extra weight or perhaps pound a brass shim under a ring. As for me it's Cod-Locks all the way. I love these things!

I saw those the other day. I've never used those type of bases, but I guess my question would be, why don't they just make the rings themselves like that?

Jason,

That's a good question! Weight is always an issue when you are trying to make 10 1/2 pounds. But in the past the single scope rings and bases pretty much worked with out modification. But somewhere along the line something has changed, possiblely some bases getting cut smaller or the cut out for the rings getting larger. One change is anodized bases and rings. Those are certainly more difficult to keep from moving. The worst case senario having both anodized.

But a double screw with a single ring could be real nice!

If you are going to add that weight might as well use Bat one piece ring and base...... ?? can't slip.... jim

I'm a believer in taking the scope off before changing a barrel. The sideways shock when a barrel breaks loose is rough on scopes.

The one piece bat rings are a pita When you're taking barrels on and off.

Bart, mine are not that tight, i use a short extension on the T handles. for my back. I don't like to add the stress to thing with high torque, I don't think you need to tighten a barrel like track bolts on a D-11..... LMAO..... jim

Bart I'm not questioning your opinion on breaking your barrel lose are reinstalling it with the scope on , Have you learn this the hard way or do you base the facts from a scope manufacture, what is your reason based on ? because I never take my scopes off I guess I will Start

If that receiver will flex removing a barrel something is wrong. Barrel in a vice and the action wrench is at the front of the receiver and the back is going for a ride. Rather than wear the dovetails out taking them on and off, i would just loosen the two screws on the rear ringing leave the other end tight.
If the action flexed your glue in wouldn't last as long as your scope...... jim

Just cannot leave this thread alone any longer!

I'm 69 and have never had my cods locked. It sounds painful and not interested in applying anything to my cods to lock them at this point in life.

Sorry, but just had to say it.
Travelor,

It's sounds bad, but it's not! When you're big cod guy, such as myself, its comforting knowing that your cods aren't going all Willy-Nilly when you're trying to shoot. I complained all last year that my damn cods weren't locked and it cost me at some matches. In this sport cod control is an essential to improved accuracy!

Travelor, Even at 69 I think you could benifit From improved cod control!
Go ahead and get yourself a couple of cod locks! They are ready when you are!

Says the guy who is bitching about his NF Scopes moving!

Sometimes it might be better to take a knee and just think for a minute, "hummmm, maybe there could be something to that."

Bart

I think the reason that scopes are sliping on the bases more now is "scopes are getting heavier" and thus harder to hold secure,,,,and the reason some reccommend to remove the scope is "not" because of the action twisting but the "shock" that the scope feels when the bbl breaks loose,,,Roger

Bart, I would guess you would have a point if the NXS and March And Valdada never have an issue. If the scope was hurt from removing a barrel the glued action would have had to come apart from flexing. I have no crack or jerk when i remove them or put them on. jim

Jim,

It's got nothing to do with glued in actions and flexing. You don't get it and that's OK! Did I say all problems with scopes come from not removing them when changing a barrel? Nope!!!

Scopes have a myriad of issues that can make them not hold point of aim. By removing the scope when changing a barrel I'm just minimizing some of those issues.

Many scopes may withstand years of side impact, but they aren't designed for it.
Leave your scope on or take it off. It makes no difference to me. But to argue against it is silly!

For the rest of the boys and girls out there you may want to consider:

When removing a barrel that was a little too tight and it snaps loose. Thats about the equivalent of throwing your scope sideways against a wall.

Wouldn't you just need one. In front of rear ring. I never seen a scope slide backwards, always forward. I believe like Roger said heavier scopes and recoil makes the scope want to stay and the gun move back. Matt

Bart, i see what you are saying and it makes sense, If you tighten a barrel that tight cause this. mine only go to 75 ft.lbs. no crack, no jerking like being thrown agains a wall. ...... jim

Matt you are a 100% right, they only move forward under recoil.... jim

Matt,,,,you are rite ,,,,Im gona tell on myself ,,,once upon a time at the nationals I changed scopes and was hurrying and forgot to tighten the base screws on my rings and went to the bench and shot three shots at the big target just for sighting in and got the gun zeroed ,,,then when I went to the record target the scope flew off the rifle and I caught it in mid-air before it hit the bench or concrete floor !!! whew,,,Smiley Hensley was sitting right beside me and said "I bet you couldnt do that again,,,hahah".....I put the scope back on and another shooter there had a tool box handy with allen wrenches and I tighten it up )finally) and since there was only one shot on the record target I zeroed on the sighter and then went to the record target and shot my group around that bullet hole and shot .5xx at 200 yds and as they say "dodged" a bullet ,,,hahah,,,,,I saw the sight picture go away and there was the scope floating in slow motoin ,,,,,LUKY catch,,,,Roger
