Opps, Mike .375 H&H too much, too many happy memories..

300+ LB friend bought a 700 safari in 375H&H, bunch of us watched him shoot it for the first time one hot summer day.
When he touched off the recoil sent a fat shock wave down his body, he then turns to us and says
"Farking Brutal". We literally peed in our pants laughing.
I have a rather "rotund" friend here in Australia who I let have shots with my 375 and the fat shock wave you mentioned really is a thing as we watched it travel back and forth through his body.

I've never owned or shot a rifle in .375 H&H Mag. However I did once shoot a Weatherby rifles in .378 W.M. & .460 W.M. The .378 had the worse recoil of the two.
Ive had a shot of a few 460 Weatherbies here in Australia and though I can take a fair bit of recoil, the 460 was just too harsh for me. Though I bought my 375 H&H for hunting scrub bulls, buffalo and camels, in reality my 375 gets used more for rabbits for a bit of fun. I was wanting a 378 Weatherby next but have heard too many reports similar to yours where they say it is just brutal.

The .378 had the sharpest, must umpleasant recoil of any rifle I've ever shot. Just brutal. My boddy loaded his with some 350gr bullets and both of us only shot it omce.

ISS > [submarine races in Groton on Friday nights??] I'm uncertain....I had an Attack Sub Surface not 200 yards West of me In The "Race" Heading into my port. I came too close, I'm guessing..They are Big. Mike in Ct Damit

That 350 Grain job, really gets my Attention. I said with that nice Lyman cast bullet [275 grains gas checked]. I reduced the max load to 68% needed a wisp of dryer lint to hold the charge in correct placement to primer flash.. It Just flattens stuff n is fun to show off with. mike in ct. Damit

An elderly friend had a 375 Interarms. I shot it off hand at about 50 yards at a steel plate. My Swift left very very shallow dents. A 270 would peen it. That 375 punched...er...melted...a hole right thru it and hardly swung it. I found it pleasant to shoot offhand. Not nearly as bad as a 460 handgun or even my dad's stick of Satan 16 ga shotgun. I guess it was a good design. IIRC they were 275 grain bullets but that is pretty hazy in the memory banks.

I've owned/shot/huynted with man 375 H&H and had one reamed out to the 375 Wby. My favorite was a Mod 700 BDL SS I killed elk with, fantastic rifle! No brake either. I owned a Mod 700 Classic, but it was too light so had it braked. Gave to a friend in South Africa. Tried the Mod 70 African. killed one MD with 235X, like carrying a truck axle! Owned two Whitworth Express, great for Africa (nosltalgia) a bit too heavy for the mountains for me. A #1 Tropical also, too heavy. I had a Mod 700 BDL SS tricked out with a synthetic Drop Magazine custom synthetic, reamed to the 375 Wby, and Outfitter wanted it so bad he traded me a West Texas Aoudad hunt for it and its 2.5x8 (older Leupolds, held together/held zero!) I shot a Ram that went 32"!! I used a friends Mod 70 African SS in 375 for a warthog. Its a fine round. I stopped hunting Africa back in 2002, used a tricked out Mod 700 Classic 35W reamed to the Ackley in a custom Brown Precision for 20 yrs, stuck with it until a few years ago. Up to 300yds it was indistingiushable from the 375. You "will" get weird looks from other hunters in America with a 375 in the Mountains, ha!

I have one that was built on a Sako A-V action. The maker is passed away now. He chambered a barrel blank for me, made the stock out of a blank of Claro Walnut I picked out from a rack in his basement. When he made the stock, he installed a tube of mercury. The gun is very heavy. I shoot a 270 grain bullet but I’d doesn’t beat me up too badly. I haven’t shot on several years but wouldn’t hesitate to take it out to the range again. I may be a little flaky on the first shot or two, but it’s really no worse than my 300 Win. Mag.
