Opinions on Tooling Remington 700 Receivers

I am wanting to true the reciever on Remington 700`s and there are a few name brand offerings, I know opinions can vary, but help guide me to which I might should avoid. I want to get my understanding to speed before I lay down the hard earned cash. I want to and may make my own jig like I did my outboard spider with exception of bigger of course, but which inside system works best as in mandrels and bushings, or if another method I`m all ears. Thanks for any help, Tim

I have the bolt work figured out.

Tim heres what I made to single point the threads, hit the lugs abutments, and face the reciever.
I use a Gre Tan mandrel and diff bushing sizes to dial it in.... I did have the Manson bar and bushings but sold it off.

Beautifully done Keith! Love that jig. I was thinking of another posters idea maybe to thread the jig in place of the chuck 2 1/4 x 8.

That will def work also Tim then just dial it in off the jack screws....
Mine only sticks out a little more than if I were chambering, obviously most of the actions in the chuck.
I'm certain you will make something that works like a charm!

Theres definitely a learning curve to using the tooling. If you check your work you will find it may not be as true as you wanted. Easy to make them look pretty but does the body body center in the raceway with pressure on the bolt face or is it putting upward or down ward pressure on the rear bridge? I have been running across some warped receivers, then what do you do? if your alignment mandrel has any bind at all it wont dial in true. I think you'll find that to get them really true you will end up reaming a lot of them. I just did one, timed, trued, new bolt handle, bushed firing pin, pinned lug, larger scope holes, bushed bolt body, wyatts 4" box and side bolt release... What is a rem action worth? 350 no matter whats done.

And there's the rub. Buy a Rem action (or beater gun for the action) then go to all the time to "true" it only to find it is a poor frame to build a quality rifle. So you out in all that work and end up with a $350 action.

Threaded 2-1/4"x8tpi to thread onto my spindle.

Dialed into .0004" TIR

I made mine out of a piece of DOM 3.00" OD x .500 wall x 2.00" ID 1020 DOM Round Steel Tube

I used 3/8x24tpi brass tipped screws from McmasterCarr.com 1" long with no heads.

front screws are roughly 1/2" from the face of the tubing.
roughly 4" back from the front screws for Rem 700 SA
roughly 5" back from the front screws for Rem 700 LA

I use the Labounty mandrels from brownells to dial in off the bolt raceway. Has worked perfect for my needs and experience level.

If i was to change anything it would be to change the jack screws to 1/2x20 brass tipped set screws. The 3/8x24 have a tip diameter of 3/16" were as the 1/2x20 screws have a 1/4" tip diameter.

As stated, truing a Rem so it runs like a (insert name) is easy. Making your own jig, which we all have is simple. The big rub is resale. If you're going to keep it, make a jig. Ours cost like $15. Similar to what has been shown. If you sell it in the future, it is still a factory action. The few toolings needed to true your action you already have I bet, unless you need a mandrel. So for $15 go for it.

I will be needing the mandrel.

Tim has been doing his own work for quite some time now. He is a sharp cookie and does great work. I have no doubt he will come up with something and do just fine. Lee
