Opinions on suppressor end cap strike?

I had a very strange thing happen today.

I finished a custom built 300 WM earlier this year. Been working on load development and went out to test again this morning.

Barrel is Bartlein and was machined to take a Ops INC/ Allen Enginnering suppressor. The machining and mounting of the suppressor is 100% correct.

Before this morning I have put about 50 rounds thru the rifle with zero issue.

So I sat down to test my latest ladder.

The first shot I fired did not hit paper(gun is sighted in), I figured what the hell its early I yanked the shot. So I shoot my 2 groups and both are sub MOA. I shot a few more rifles and started packing up to head home when I noticed the strike on the end cap of my suppressor. So it appears that the first shot fired contacted the end of the suppressor for some reason.

This is hand loaded Ammo. 78gr of H1000 pushing a 210gr SMK out of a Norma case.

Here’s the gun-

Here’s the targets-

And here is the end cap strike-

I am at a loss as to what happened here. I assume it’s ammo related since the rifle has been flawless before and after.

Anyone have any opinions on this?

Assuming everything is tight. Crud / cleaning patch material / something in the suppressor that upset the bullet on your first shot?

I'm no expert, but first off that looks like more of a tear than a bullet hit. I'd say the bullet and a chunk of carbon tried to exit at the same time. 2nd, by the exposed bare metal on the bottom of the sleeve, looks like a take apart can that the end cap did not get timed right on reassembly.

I have seen an end cap caused from shooting a few hundred Rounds of 22 Creedmoor followed directly by 7 mag. 30 caliber magnum rated can of reputable manufacture.

First shot knocked the crud loose, second caused the strike.

That’s all the info I have.

I destroy metal for fun and career. My ocd doesnt find fault but looks for cause out of sheer curiousity. This is very interesting. Almost wish it happened to me so i could figure out the cause first hand. Keep us informed any other info or photos.

H1000 is notorious for making a mess with a suppressor, it just leaves way more carbon than almost any other powder. It's a shame because almost nothing better in a 300 winmag, but you may want to look into another powder. As much carbon as it builds up in a suppressor, if it starts to close up the bore diameter it can clip a bullet.

It almost looks like the strike is deeper on outward side of end cap. If a bullet struck a little bit of carbon build up that could cause that type of strike as it started to destabilize on the way out the can. Of course your target pics show no bullet getting sent off course so maybe not, unless bullet was sent clean off target.

I had a baffle strike about two months ago and felt it, saw a grey puff at muzzle, and it was a different sound. It wasn't much deeper of a strike than your can is showing. I knew it the second I shot it, did you notice a difference in any of your shots? And if so did you confirm that shot went into your groups?

That is the weirdest suppressor strike I have ever seen. I don't see how it can be from the bullet. I'll agree with Milo that the bullet and a chunk of carbon tried to exit at the same time or something was stuck on the end cap before the first fire.

Thanks for the replies.

After seeing the answers about carbon build I started reading about H1000 and suppressors and found that H1000 causes carbon build at much faster rate than other powders.

The rifle and supressor are both new and have only been shot together.

The combination has 56 rounds through it. Does anyone think carbon build up is the issue with such a low round count?

Logic says no, but anything can happen. I'm assuming it is a take apart suppressor, not one piece. If it is, take it down and see what you have built up.
Like I said earlier, that end cap does not look right.
All brands of suppressors have different style baffles. Plus you could shoot 15K rds through it and never see this again.

It’s a sealed suppressor.

I went out to the shop this morning and took some pictures with my bore camera.

From the muzzle end-

And from the attachment end-

So it appears the bullet was the problem as the suppressor is clean.

Shiny ring probably from finish being rubbed off and reflection in picture. All mine are shiny there due to riding on floor board

I would listen to this guy..he has had his fair share of baffle strikes and a magneto v3 bayonet strike:eek::D
