opinions on mini-mauser

I'm thinking about building a walking varminter in a mid size 22 caliber like a 223 or smaller. I suspect the eastern european mauser I mentioned is in a get what you pay for catagory but wanted to see what some other folks thought of the idea. I might just buy a kimber or a cooper and have done with it - but I just like the mauser action.

Thanks,
Robin

I am building one at this time in 220[Russian]Beggs.I will be very disappointed if it is not a great shooter. Mine has the PPC bolt face as it was originally a 7.62X39.

They are engineered quite well. We blew one up in 7.62X39 a few years back, and although it was a catastrophic failure and the action had to be junked, the safety features worked as intended, and the shooter was not injured. The only parts left of the entire gun that were usable were the barrel and the trigger. Everything else was cracked, bent, splintered, twisted, etc.

The load was supposed to be 23.4 of Reloder 7, NOT 23.4 of AA No 7.

Wont do that again.

Have since picked up another action and I won't hesitate to build it up with a .308" bore, 12 twist Krieger Palma take-off, and chamber it in 7.62X39 Lapua. Just gotta pay more attention to the powder cans.

I have a rem 799 (made by Zastava) in .222 and is supposed to be the same as the older Charles Daly and Interarms. I really like it. The bolt is a little sloppy and the trigger needs work, but it shoots good and handles nicely.

That's what the guy from Accurate Arms Powder said! ;)

The good thing from all this is the gas escape features on the action worked, and directed the high pressure gas away from the shooters face.

I have several mini's & they are a nice lightweight platform. I have a 223, 223 AI, 7.62x39 & a 30PPC. All are accurate but only the 7.62 has a factory barrel. Every one of them needed the lugs trued though. Nothing wrong with the receiver although I lap the lugs after the bolt is trued. The threads are a 22 x 1.5mm.

I really appreciate the replies. After speaking with my local gunsmith about the possibility of getting the mini mauser trigger improved or an aftermarket one fitted - I found another option. Montana Rifles is in the process of building a minature version of a Win M70. http://www.montanarifleco.com/mini%20action.html I've heard good things about their actions and rifles.

Now this intrigues me. Pehaps by the time I've decided on a caliber and saved my $ their new mini M1999 will be ready for market.

The planning phase of these projects is really fun!! Thanks again

Robin,
Do a search on www.accuratereloading.com on Montana Rifles. You may be waiting many many moons for their product. The original 1999s were 4-5 yrs late. Same problem with their big bore receivers. Also know that most gunsmiths call them kit receivers. They are in bad need of blue printing.
That said, I have not heard of them keeping money and not delivering product. Just be aware of the time factor.

Butch,

Thanks – I read somewhere that their initial offerings needed blueprinting but they have since tightened things up. I’ll keep researching.

Much obliged,

Robin

I have had a mini action ordered from Montana for about 5-6 years. Before they moved. They were trying to pre-sell the 1st run but apparently didn't happen.

Larry,

That's not good news at all! I understand building a rifle is a long term project but my funeral may happen first. Thanks for the update and good luck. Hopefully they will overcome their difficulties.

Robin

The CZ 527 has a 'bastard' (meaning not standard) metric thread a lot of lathes are not geared for. I'd have to look up the pitch, again.
