Opinions of my needs/wants

I have come to position of having a coyote rifle just as I have always imagined of having. A light weight rifle that shoots lights out. At least for me and my wants. I have an kimber montana w/douglas 1-12 barrel that shoots 70 TNT'S or 88 burgers half MOA if I do my part & no wind.
I have at my disposal, a 270 win BAR Safari and a rem 700 ADL in 7 rem mag. Both guns are MOA. Nothing more tho.
I realized right after I ordered my barrel that I should of went with a 1-8 instead of the 1-12.
The BC of the 88 berger is .388. The BC of the 105 berger is .547. Here in the flat lands of IL the wind blows a lot. Not as bad as the west, but enough to be concerned about hitting yotes at longer ranges.
My question is what I have now good enough and just use it till the barrel goes? ( Once I load develop, I don't tend to shoot it too much except for checking zero.) Or should I do something with my 2 rifles and make another 6mm caliber set up (243 or 6-284) to shoot the 105's ? I would want another light weight rig like a rebarreled montana again. Overtime I pick the montana up I feel like Im squeezing kate upton. ;)
Thanks in advance.

If you are hoping to save the pelts, do you really need something more powerful like a 6-284?

My fur buyer got burnt last year after paying me $15 each on the hoof. He isn't paying anything this year. I use to skin them in the past. Not to thrilled with doing it again.
Just thinking about less misses at longer ranges.

You are using too much gun - no coyote that ever walked needs a 270 or 7mm Magnum or even a 243 to drop it.

Get a 22-250 or a .220 Swift - either of those will drop 'yotes further than you can hit them.... and leave something to pick up off the ground.

Hi 370bc. I've seen a lot of people with basically the same problem over the years.

First off you didn't state what cartridge you were going to use, however you do recognize that you very likely will have wind problems so I don't think you will be happy with a 12 twist barrel.

The first thing I would do is contact whoever you bought the barrel from and see if you can exchange it for a more appropriate barrel that you want, just explain that you made a mistake (Barrel must be as you received it).
After all you did say: "I have an kimber montana w/douglas 1-12 barrel that shoots 70 TNT'S or 88 burgers half MOA if I do my part & no wind."
That tells me the wind is giving you problems.

As for wearing out the barrel on the Kimber shooting coyote, that might take years literally , it's just not that much shooting.

The problem as to whether you should leave everything as is or build another rifle is simple. Build a great new rifle with the help of extremely knowledgeable people on this web site 8).

However you need to answer some questions first. These are necessary so everyone knows what you want to do

Will it just be for coyotes?
What would be your longest range for shooting (longest shot you can imagine)?
What cartridge, and do you want suggestions?
How much weight can you handle in a new rifle with ease, is this a walking rifle that you want to carry all over the country side or a set up type rifle ?

Hope this helps you.

I wouldn't worry about long ranges unless you are missing. If you want to build a rifle just to shoot long range then that's a different story.

Before you do anything, I suggest that you sit down with the JBM Ballistics app and see if the extra BC of the 105-ish pills is really a deal maker for you.

Are you sure that you are happy with the Berger 88 FB? Their website says that it needs a 1:10 to stabilize. Might be part of your wind issues right there.

My Knights bullet flight app say at 600 yards (my max distance for now), says my 88's @ 3050fps at 600 yards is 72.2' drop and 35.3' wind.

'If' I can get 2600 fps with a 105 berger out of a 24' barrel like I have (I want to keep weight down), my drop is
88.6' and wind is 30.5''.

I am happy with the 88's grouping and performance so far. I am trying to think ahead and plan for more windy days of hunting/sniping notes only.
I like the 6mm caliber so far. I shot 100m grainers in the 7 mag & little more recoil than I like. I have a muzzle break on my 243 to watch the hit or misses in the scope.
Weight in my mind, is everything. I had the action on the montana bedded and it added a lot more weight than I wanted. (guessing a pound). Field ready is 8 pounds, 10 ounces.
The velocity of the 105 with a 24'' barrel is not too impressive. So that would mean a different 6mm type cartridge.
I would be willing to go to a 6.5 caliber maybe. Either way the new rig will have a muzzle break.
The 270 BAR cannot hold max loads, and I don't want to try.
The 7mag is overkill. It shoots 140 and the 168 bergers VLD's MOA out to 600. I really don't want to put a break on a factory remington barrel.
I asked about changing the barrel right after I put the order in. They said it was too late.
Great suggestions and thoughts.
I would love to spend 8 grand on a new build, Im just about 8 grand short tho. :)

Not saying you are wrong about the 88 in your 1:12. Just wanted you to know what Berger says. 1:10 or faster. See the link below.

Bedding added a pound? That's pretty strange. You sure there isn't something else contributing to the added weight?

5" at 600 yards? How many yotes do you shoot at 600 yards? Does it justify rebarreling? I don't know what kind of rest you are able to get. In perfect conditions, what kind of group do you get at 600 yards?

I'm not arguing against a 1:8. Just trying to keep things fact based.

3050 fps with the 88's from a .243 Winchester chambered 24" barrel seems like a slow node. I get 3350 from a 24" 8tw 6X47L with no pressure signs. If you can safely get up to another node this will help your cause. I did switch to the 105 gr. A-Max but this was for better terminal performance on Chucks. I had no troubles at 600 yards with the 88's, at my velocity, on steel.

I know what you are saying. I tried to correct my error in choosing the wrong twist rate the best I could. An accurate shooter member said he accomplished good grouping with the 88's with his 1-12. I thought I would give it a shot and it worked.
I haven't had the opportunity to go to 600 yards yet. The last time I was at 200. I have never shot a group that good at 200 and not have it perform well at 600. I might get a chance this week to go to 600.

My factory barrel would reach 4000fps w/ 55 bal tips w/ no problem. With the douglas barrel with the same load I can only go in the 3700 range.
So maybe the same conditions apply to my slower numbers w/ 88's.
The amount of yotes I shoot at @ 600 yards in the past were zero. I have never had such an accurate rig to even attempt going past 350 comfortably. But now that I do poses such a rig, I will be setting up my sniping positions much further distances than before. Most of my shots started at 2 and go to 350.
