opinion on Hart Barrels as compared to others

My local smith swears by them. And most local bench shooters like them to. I don't have one myself yet cause they are more expensive then the Krigers

I just checked Brunos for prices on both makes in 6mm. Most Hart barrels are $315; Kriegers $335.

Depends on the length and the price difference is so minimal it practically doesn't matter! The only determining factor I could see is the preference between cut rifling or button rifling.

well we know you can't believe websites, Douglas and Hart prices on the web are both wrong, hart by 5.00 and Douglas by 60.00.
a 20 cal barrel on Bruno in krieger is 80.00 more than the hart, brux doesn't list a 20 nor does Boughton.
thinking of making a 20 ppc, don't need one just never had one.

Don't know what happened with my barrel but it was a piece of junk and the customer service was horrible. It was a switch barrel action and the other barrel (krieger) shot very well and the hart couldn't group less than 4" at 300 yds with multiple combos (250+ shots) of powder, bullets, seating depth, etc. It was very frustrating and when I called hart and told them about the problem they wouldn't replace their barrel, giving me the runaround about how my gunsmith screwed it up, blah blah, blah. I told them that doesn't make sense b/c my other barrel shoots great and has from the start unlike their hart barrel. Make a long story short, my gunsmith offered to chamber a new krieger barrel in the exact same caliber with the exact same reamer for no additional cost b/c he felt bad about the way hart had treated me and what do you know??? It shoots lights out! Imagine that, you couldn't give me a hart barrel!

bholcomb,

You still got the old one?

You should call krieger and see if they will take a barrel that has been Smithed!

To the OP, Call around and ask some of the well known Smith's what they think about Hart and follow up on your question..I would guess they have seen every barrel under the sun in their lathes and gotten feedback.

No. Traded it for a couple boxes of bullets. I told the guy that wanted it about all the problems I had with it and he didn't care so he rechambered it to whatever he was going to use and he couldn't get it to shoot either. It's probably better used as a trot line weight.

Every gunsmith I ever talked to said the Krieger's are straight when they chuck them up in the lathe. They also stress relieve their barrels. Matt

Isnt it funny. I had a Shilen on a 280AI that would not shoot. Took it off and installed a Hart. Its a good shooter now. Funny how it goes some times. Ihave shyed away from Shilens until recently and have found they shoot just fine. I just ended up with one that didnt shoot well for some reason. I have a feeling your customer service troubles soured you more than the barrel or product.
Again its funny sometimes one guy has great luck... the next....Not so much. Tis is life it seems.
