Opening a bolt face

Years ago I had Sid Goodling build me a Dasher on a Bat SV action. He opened the PPC bolt face so I could use the BR brass. I am fairly certain that he said it would still work for both case heads. (Have yet to try it on a PPC) I am currently looking at a used PPC rifle, and would like to know if I can get the bolt opened up to work reliably with both cartridges. Thanks for any advice!

Making a bolt to fit both cartridges is a compromise. It can be done but you may have problems. the diameter is somewhat critical to the cartridge. I generally install extractors toward the tight end so that you get optimal extraction. If the PPC is set tight, then the BR cartridge likely will hit on top of the extractor. So the PPC extractor should be slightly ovesized--perhaps set for a .450 to .455 diameter cartridge. It won't fully engage the PPC (.441) but should extract it if it isn't an overly hot load. There should be enough ramp on the extractor to open up and catch the BR rim (.473 diameter).

I've never done this. I think I could. But it would be difficult to fix if it didn't turn out.

Is the bolt you are referencing a Sako style extractor or M-16 style?

Send it in to bat and it’s $80 to get it changed (open bolt face and new extractor) they just did one for me. Quick turn around to.
