One stray bullet

Over the weekend i was working on a load for my 243 vls. I have been shooting 34 gr of varget with 95 vlds about .6. I felt I needed more velocity and accuracy so I played around. The more powder I used the larger the groups so my hope for more velocity went down the drain. I loaded 5 at 33.8 and had 4 together and one stray. Does anyone know what can cause a flyer.
I am using new lapua brass
Fed 210 primers
OAl is to Box length
Hs precision stock with 60 in pounds on screws.
6-24 burris black diamond

Hi tnhunter,
Many things can cause flyers. One problem might be that you are not putting the 95 grain VLD's into the lands/grooves. That is where a VLD usually shoots best. Of course if you are shooting magazine OAL you cannot do that, so try different seating depths up to the magazine OAL. Back your powder charge down because deeper seating will cause higher preasure.

Well just a suggestion,try a differant powder and primer,I personally never loaded for a .243,But plan to buy one soon,I would try IMR4350 and a rem91/2 primer.or H414.Also would be shooting them through the chrony to see what kind of speed and ES i was getting with that powder and load.If the velocity was good and ES low i would try shooting several groups to see if the flyer was ME a bad case something with the rifle(wind) ect.and would also shoot them at 300yds.I have a load with a big rifle that has very consistant velocity and a low ES but it disturbs the rifle when it recoils greatly,so if you dont follow the shot well its out of the group,I have another load for the same rifle thats 100fps faster but has less recoil and disturbs the rifle less and you can muff a shot and look up and it still right there in the group.Very strange i know. well that just some suggestions.

Many things can cause flyers. One problem might be that you are not putting the 95 grain VLD's into the lands/grooves., 6BRonWheels I shoot 150vld's in .270 win at .010 jump(thats because my rifle has a short throat).I know several guys who are shooting berger vld's in hunting rifles that are jumping them as much as .090 away and they shoot great.I have seen targets and not just one several from these rifles with sub 1/2 3 shot groups at 100yds.I have shot five shot groups that are .550 at 100yds with them jumping.So i know that they have allways said must be seated into the lands to shoot but thats just not true and even berger will tell you that now.I think that they say now from .010 to .030 and from .060 to .090 they will shoot great.(i could be wrong on them specs but its something like that).Im say n this just so tnhunter know with that rem(witch may have a long throat) you can jump them vld's far and still shoot good groups.

Shot this group today. The temp was 95.7 and no wind. 33.8 varget 95 gr vld. new lapua brass. This in not a great group but i am happy for the conditions. How would i go about determining the group size vertical was 2.239 and horizntal was 2.291

What size is the center circle on this target and what was the range?

sorry 300 yds. Shot off of bipod laying on the ground with one bag to support at rear. center of circle is 2 in I think. Each line coming off of the circle is a inch.

Try going up .5 grn to 34.3 if you have room. This looks to me to be a scatter group based on your previous post and you should find a good node 1 or 2 percent above 33.8

I guess 2.297 is ok for a factory rifle.

2.297 (3/4 MOA) at 300 yards with a factory rifle is not bad at all IMO.

Maybe off topic,,
But why do guy's always look for a problem with the rifle when one shot goes stray?

I mean for goodness sakes, matches are won and lost by precision guns worth 1000's of $,,,and one stray shot,
Heven forbid the human machine should fail to do it's job precisly
