One last Safari for the year

Back out for one last time this year. Temps and wind are good. A fair bit of spotty rain and it is green. Grass is high enough that you can’t see the little buggers.
Met a couple of nice guys dove hunting. Small talk led to some more and of coarse one of them was a member here. Always good to meet another shooter with similar likes. The gent has to be a good guy, his dog is a German Whirehair, just lost my old girl a year ago. Darn good pups!

It's a small world. Went on a dove hunting trip with my son and happened to meet three gentlemen that were prairie dog shooters. Really enjoyed swapping after hunt stories with you guys.
I always throw in a rifle for a midday break from dove hunting if there's possibly a prairie dog town nearby. This year my, new to me, 20 VT was having issues feeding from magazine. When I asked the three REAL prairie dog shooters to look at my rifle, they bent over backwards to help me. Thanks again JSH.

Was a pleasure to visit with you guys. Darn never did get to meet your pup though. I will be digging through my cook books for dove recipes now, ;-).

Last day conditions were the best for the week. Tall grass, wind and mirage kicked our tails pretty good the first three. Hunted four different towns the last day, helped clean up the average from days prior. I could swap rifles as wanted or needed. Like a dufuss I didn’t get my 20VT out first thing in the morning. Got on my favorite 223 and ran that. Then the 22BR came out, running 40 grain Vmax and wanting to empty some brass to try the 53’s.
The more I play with the 22BR the more it impresses me. Those that are sitting on the fence for building one, gather brass and dies, you won’t regret it. Most will wonder why they did t have one sooner.
Played with the 22Nosler, bolt gun. Howa mini action, Oryx chassis use 6.5 Grendel mags. Came to the conclusion I need to spend more time with it. It shows promise, I just can’t get a warm fuzzy feeling about this chassis. I have plans on how to add some weight.

I am not in the habit of walking around in dog towns nor handling the rodents.
Buddy had whacked a young coyote with his 22 Creedmoor. It was in some tall grass close to 1000. He walked out and I was sitting at the bench guiding him to where he said it was.
Happened to be a little mound just a few feet from the bench. Felt like I was being watched. Yup an eye ball and top of the head, he was getting ready to charge me I am pretty sure! So what does one do they have large tusk and sharp claws, ya gotta protect your self. IMG_2007.jpegIMG_2005.jpeg
Had to have a trophy, so I got his tail and put it in a pill bottle. It is now in some borax to dry and hope the hair sets. Going to make a hat pin with a 45 Colt case. I have shot numerous ones years before at various ranges and various long range cartridges in handguns and wheel guns.

This was a first for my me with a big bore revolver.
Now I can’t lead on like I shot this with conventional ammo and “barked” it. Had my home made snake loads using cut down 410 hulls with a load of 9 shot. None the less it was a big bore revolver;-) so that counts, lol. Actually wish I had taken my 480 Ruger with my 45-70 modified shot brass, it’s just not as handy as the little Black Hawk.

The unfound coyote and the charging prairie dog were the highlights of the week.

The wind I mentioned buddy with his 22CM and me fooling with the 6CM, notes were taken and much learned once again. Not that we cuss the wind, just prefer less of it. You deal with what Mother Nature provides and learn and go forward.
Tuesday was gusty and made for a challenge. We made some impacts with a crosswind being out only way to shoot. The 22CM was impressive to say the least. In no wind, it is a flipping laser. Told him he just needs to go on and order another to have on hand.
I had read some poor reviews and findings on the 87vmax for the 6CM. Factory ammo and handloads I have zero to complain about out to 850 yards.

Youngest son has two of them, fine dogs. He hunts mostly Pheasant/Chukar
Bill those are some fine pups. I get choked up thinking of mine. Put some pics up here if you can. I have not met a wirehair I did not like yet, doubt I ever will. Loyal as all get out.
Best to ya bud.
My new little girl dog is still at the puppy palace. Got back to late to go get her. Two extra days, she is gonna be PO’d for sure.

IMG_1905.jpegWhen she is calm. Which is seldom. Loves to ride and would prefer to drive, working on her learners permit. She does better than a lot at the Walmart pushing a buggy.
Just showed my age, do you push a shopping cart, or a buggy lol. Icebox or a fridge is another.
