One Last Outing In Ohio

Managed to go hunting last Wednesday with Nomad47 one last time before we head south for the winter. Bill was gracious once again to take me to some of his best spots and let me get some shooting done with my 243. Got 5 for the day from three stands. Ranged from 46 yards to 149. Here they are in no particular order. Did some damage.

Spotted one for bill at 800 yards. He got several shots at it as it kept coming out for more. He just missed it by a nose, literally, on the last one.

All in all it was a good day in Ohio for this Jersey boy!

Yeah, a .243 will pretty much destroy a g-hog at those (closer) ranges! I just bought a Sako A7 Varmint (24" fluted barrel, light B&C stock) in .243, on sale thru today at area Cabela's stores. Probably will be an SLR or AI conversion someday. Will have to meet up for a central OH "6mm Summer Smackdown" sometime in the future. :D

No cleaning and eatin' them! LOL
Good shooting. Still hammering them in PA and need two more to make a hundred for the season.

Bill, Bangs Ohio and others. Why don't we make some plans to meet in different areas through the summer next year and spread the love, (oy GH guts) depending on your point of view. Off line we can discuss places, acreage etc.

There are several of us on this forum that shoot g'hogs in central Ohio. And getting together sounds great. I don't want to rain on your parade, but a few wssmzone forum (no long in existence) members tried that a few years ago and it turned into a real fiasco.

What went wrong??

I won't go into all the details but here are a couple.

One of the forum members brought a friend with him and as they were taken to places where we got permission, they would mark the locations in their GPS units. Then after being told not to shoot near llamas, they shot a groundhog within 50 feet of one.

We had 8 or 9 guys. With that many, we split into two, sometimes three, groups. (We felt the farmers would get a little nervous if 9 guys with rifles showed up in one of their fields.) And there was bickering about who would go with who.

The member that was gung ho to have an "annual forum shoot" drug his feet and did very little of the planning. Then he took his shooters to his worst fields. I was one of three "hosts" and I went to the owners of my best fields and asked if they would mind if I showed up with two or three others to shoot groundhogs. I also said I would take full responsibility for their actions.

Sounds like it should be set up as a get together at a range and compare notes and do some shooting for bragging rights. Paper, lolly pops, eggs, etc. at different ranges ( longer better). Just a thought, Tom.

and we wonder why the gates are locked. and signs are posted and I only hunt by myself, what a shame

Why cant people just be cool and relaxed. Why would it matter who goes with who. I would drive down and I personally wouldnt care who I went with, that way you get fully aqainted with each other with a nice relaxed hunt.

That is what happens when you allow frieds, aqaintances and relatives go hunting with you to land that you have specific permission for and the trust of the farmer......MOST JUST DON'T GIVE A DAMN!
