One Game-Hunting Rifle -- What Would It Be?

kind of not fair, I almost don’t own anything in a “factory” rifle.

Probably a Win M70 in 7-08.

Model 70 30-06

My preference would be the SST extreme weather variant, but a super grade in walnut and blue steel is a great choice too. I'd have to pass if this were my only hunting rifle as it will get drug through all sorts of weather and dirt/mud.

I’d probably stick with my model 722 in .308 that I got from my dad. I might upgrade the Weaver 4x scope, but then again, maybe not.

You are allowed one rifle to hunt deer size game with for the rest of your life. It has to be a factory rifle of whatever chambering and factory configuration you want from whatever time period you want. What is it?
if you could go custom what would change?
I apologize (sort of...) for time out of your life you will never get back

A 25-06 that weights 7.5 lbs with a 3x9 lighted reticle scope and made such that it doesn’t mind the rain...

MQ1

Model 700 in .243 Winchester.
Have a BDL model one of these my dad bought in ‘71 or ‘72. Shot my first deer with it in ‘72 or ‘73. The gold ring scope lenses got all scratched up during the years between when it got stolen and when he got it back.

I would look for a different platform than a HighWall. I’ve worked on many of them, and yes, they are very strong, but I’m not sure if they are up to the task of constant 50-60k PSI pressure. For a 6.5CM, I’d look for one of the modern Browning HighWall copies that were designed for, and made with modern steel, for high pressure cartridges

Happen to have one. It is actually a modern Japanese built Winchester. Nice rifle. Don't shoot it much but it does shoot well and I am a High Wall fan. I mean for hunting who needs more than one shot?

The smart choice in the OP's scenario would probably be a bolt gun in 308 or a combo over and under gun in 243 and 20 gauge. The latter being something that covers a wide range of game.

I already own it an 8 x 57 JSMauser sporterized.

Its been an interesting read on the reply s. I got thinking the last few days about what i should pick up in tbe offseason as far as gear for next hunting season. With girls getting old enough to start hunting i wondered what i should set them with. If i was buying rifles it would probably be a 308 bolt, and download it to what they can handle but i think i am going to buy some youth stocks for rifles i have and load accordingly in 270 and 308.
That also had me debating which rifle to shoot among the leftovers: varmint barreled savage 308 mod11 or a sporter barrel wood stock mod 110 in 7 rem mag. Either would suffice and i love a 308, but the sporter barrel with the mag contour is just about perfect for a do it all and the 150s at 3150 seem such a happy place ballistically, many would say its overkill, and its just the right amount of overkill without being absurd lol

I’m guessing a 30-06 REM 700 DBM with a stainless bbl and synthetic stock,
FWIW, that is what I have been running up and down the mountains with for going on 40 years...

The first ones were BDL mags in factory blue with factory wooden stocks that were bedded. When they started offering detachable box mag and synthetic stocks, I never looked back as I spent too many seasons in the rain, mud, and snow. I love high class walnut, but not for mule deer or elk season.
