One Game-Hunting Rifle -- What Would It Be?

You are allowed one rifle to hunt deer size game with for the rest of your life. It has to be a factory rifle of whatever chambering and factory configuration you want from whatever time period you want. What is it?
if you could go custom what would change?

My first choice would be an M38 Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55, but if I’d have to shoot “it” for the rest of my life, I’d go for the barrel life of a 308, so it would be my Remington 308 5R.

Personally, I like sporterized American milsurp rifles, which were available commercially. I have two, both done by me, a 1903 and a 1917 both in 30-06. They will do everything I need from a hunting gun and cost well under a grand each to build/buy.

Think the most obvious answer from anyone over the age of thirty-five would be a older Rem 700 , in .308 . It ain't broke . Stop trying to re-invent it . And .308 has proven to be the most versatile caliber created in 150 years .

Strictly factory I would probably go with a model 70 or 700 in a beautifully checkered and figured walnut stock with a nice deep blue, chambered in .270 Winchester and topped with a nice Leupold optic.

My “Ole Betsy” Rem 700 BDL 7mm mag got her as a Christmas present from PawPaw in 1985 when I was 15. If they’d had a Left Handed 30-06 that’s what I would have gotten. But the only LH rifle they had at the store was her and we have been many a miles together and put many a deer in the freezer and other critters too. Every time I get her out I think of PawPaw.
