??? on a new barrel and caliber

I would like to hear the thoughts of the shooters here.

I have two rifles that I'm going to re-barrel. I'm tossed up as to what to chamber them for.

These barrels will be used for prairie dogs and rock chucks at longer ranges 300 yds and out. I have a bullberry 6mm tcu and 223 in tc contenders for the close stuff.

I have three calibers that really have my interest, the 6mm br, the 6mm-22-250 and the 6.5x55, I'm not wanting any real hot barrel burners I have a 257 wsm and 25-06 for that. I'm strongly considering the 6mm-22-250 for one and the 6.5x55 swede in the other both with 28" barrels, most likely 3 groove pacnors.

Your thoughts or recommendations?

Welcome to the boards,

My original caliber choice for a new longer range varmint rig was the 6mm-250.

But once I saw the new 6.5x47 Lapua brass, I knew that was the route for me to try.

Quality of brass available for a particular cartridge is one of my primary concerns when choosing a new one.

You just can,t go too wrong with Lapua brass!

So, if you are leaning towards the 6mm-250 look hard at the 6x47 Lapua.

I did an Improved version, and really like it

For what its worth, I think the small primer pocket is a good thing, helps increase pressure capacity, and thus far have not experienced any ignition issues.

*check some of my recent posts for more info

I like the 6BR too, especially if primary target is p-dogs

Welcome bluedot,

I just went out yesterday and busted a bunch of p-dogs with my 6br and I got to say I dont think you`de be sorry if you went with one too... With ok winds I can get them to about 600yrs with 87gr v-max @3000+fps. It`s more accurate than the 6/22-250 and better on bbl`s, uses less powder, and way more load info. Try a 1:10t 28" bbl and you`ll be set for shootin past 300yrs, 1:8t will get you out a bit further with 105+gr pills.

Just my $.02, good luck,patchound

Thanks for the input

I had thought about the 6x47 lapua but wasn't sure about brass availability.

I guess I'm looking for a good push either toward the 6 br or the 6mm22-250 as I'm pretty sure that I will do a 6.5x55 swede for my windy day long range rifle.

Looks like Sunbuilder's rig is doing pretty good right here--

I have not,

1-8 twist, so I could shoot heavier bullets.

If I were shooting the lighter bullets, it would be from a 6BR.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I think that since I have to actions available to build on that one will be a 6br and the other will be the 6.5x55, the 6.5 will take care of the longer range stuff and the 6br can be used to pick up where my contenders leave off. I really like the idea of how barrel friendly the 6 br is.

For PD's and rock chucks you might want to consider the splatter factor of the 204 Ruger. Most people report that they can see their hits with the light recoil. The aerial acrobatics are unbelievable. Check it out.
