Older 40X?

I have what appears to be an older 40 X. It is a solid bottom single shot with no markings except a serial number, 41XXXB. It is currently chambered for 6x47 Rem.
Obviously accurate. The barrel has Bob White, no doubt from shooters corner, engraved on it--upside down.
Am I correct that it is a 40X?

From ATF website-
"ATF Ruling 75-28 also reminds you of the other identifying marks required by 27 CFR § 178.92[c]. In addition to a unique serial number, each firearm must be marked to show the model (if any); the caliber or gauge; the name of the manufacturer and importer, or recognizable abbreviations; the country of manufacture; and the city and State (or recognized abbreviations) in which your licensed premises are located."

Back in the old days, it was different. Some guns did not even have a serial number.

Looks like your OLD gun would have the builder/manufacture as Bob White? Back then the info was allowed to be on the barrel?

Do you know the history of the rifle?
This is my guess, hope it helps.

It's a 700/40X platform....look at the rear tang. The forward reciever sight hole was opened up for a side bolt release which was needed if you didn't want to run the factory bolt release with the target triggers of that era.

On the 40X's, the serial number and 40X designation weren't stamped...they were rolled on...the same as all 700s.

On the 40XBR receivers, the serial was rolled on and then the receivers were ground...which is why their serial numbers look different. Then the '40XBR' was electro etched on....that's why it looks like printing. It's not very deep at all.

Those actions were all gloss blued back then. This one appears to have been Parkerized...it's possible that the prep work and process have obscured the electro etched designation as it's very shallow....assuming it's a 40XBR. The port on this one is the standard 40X size...which was the same as a 700.

Good shootin' :) Al
