Old style m77 tang safey

Nope , it's still for a Remington ! You need a very old stock read RARE Redfield base that looks like the Remington one but it's meant for the Ruger 77 ST = round receiver not a 77 RS or 77R . The ONLY bases available at the time are weaver 2 piece and Redfield one piece . I just checked the Ruger book to verify . No one piece base will fit without modifying the base .

I've never done it, but I actually think that putting a pillar on the tang screw might be a good thing -- but after creating a good barrel float and bed for the lug and front screw.

I'll tell you what; no other rifle I've ever had fits me as good as the 77's, for both carry and shooting. And I've always loved the tang safety, and have no use for the new three position pieces of crap that they've gone to.

Never had any problem with the Ruger integral rings either, and would hate to bridge that comfortable gap over the port with a one piece base. Some of us have hands like this for God sake.

And with that gap between the rifle and scope, ya can use your scope like a handle and let me tell ya, a guy can get comfortable with that.

These old rifles are pretty light, great handling, and hold a warm spot for a lot of us. I've got the two of them, and my old 243 needs a new barrel. When I do it, I think I'll just go 243 again. I've killed probably thirty deer with it, and wouldn't mind killing a few more. Next barrel I won't burn up on squirrels like I did with this one. jd
Mine are a bit smaller but of the same work ethic = hard and worn .

so If you could spec out a pair of bases for round top m77 ill appreciate your advise
I apologize . I'm getting conflicting data on the bases . I've been digging thru stacks of books trying to find the old Redfield shop guide . What the oldest (1977) I can find just lists 2 piece bases 79 rear and 35 front which is dif than a Rem 700 (36 rear 35 front ) but 1990 ish books show what you pulled up , the Redfield jr base as being the same for Ruger round top mag length and Rem 700 la . IF that is correct ,than any one piece picatanny or weaver SHOULD fit . Weigand shows a 20 moa one pice rail .
A call to , dang forgot Redfield is out of business . I may have a spare Redfield , leupold or Burris one piece base for a long action Rem 700 I can send you . I'll look tomorrow and pm you if I find one . If I do it's yours , I'll ask for your address when I find it .
Gary

!
If the Rem 700 la one piece fits , let me know . This Redfield was the standard most others copied . It allowed the scope to be zeroed using the WINDAGE adjusting rear screws and left all the windage still in the scope .
The blued steel was preferred by some to match the high gloss blued finishes of the day , the windage adjustable bases were useful in some questionable machine work and the conversion of military rifles .

On Brownells site for the Weaver two piece aluminum bases, I found #35 for front, and #79 for rear. -- as you did Ggmac. jd

Looked on 2009 REDFIELD scope and base catalog which shows Ruger round top long action and 700 Rem. same base JR SR
after some searching I have an understanding how dove tail rings mount , Not sure about rear windage mounted seems problematic rather install F.R. dove tails or weaver style 2 piece.
serial # tells me rifle was built between 72 -73 so i think this falls into M77ST or round top . I have a standard 700 rem picatinny one piece and Leupold which now owns Redfield markets
Leupold 49841, QRW/PRW Scope Base, Remington 700, Matte Finish.
Which looks good
This coming weekend I will post what works and what doesnt.

Rugers get a bad rap but they have consistently been some of the best shooters I have ever messed with. A good bedding job and some solid load development will make them shoot just as good if not better than anything else out there. Combine that with the failproof Mauser style extraction and you got a sweet reliable hunting rig. I have a love-hate relationship with the integral mounts but the Leupold LRW rings have pretty much cured that.

So i got around to modifing a 20 moa pic. Rail Rem.700 LA.
Could only use three screws , also needed to shorten rear so bolt will have clearance
