Anyone got any pictures of some of the older school long range hunting/ varmint rifle set ups before got as mainstream as it is now days?
Thanks :)

My friend, who was like a step-dad to me had a cart load of them: all built on 98 mauser actions with 36" barrels. (I'd call them med. heavy) Stocks were beefy, kind of like the 40X type. The cartridges that I remember were. 6 Remington, 25-06, 257 Roberts, 22-250, .222 Rem., and crazy but true-- a .22 Long Rifle.

They were beautiful, in a plain utility way. My friend's uncle was the smith who built them, and he later married his Mom, becoming my friends step-dad. :D

I probably would have ended up with at least one of them, but frankly they didn't hold much interest for me back then. They were gawd awful heavy, single shots, and old school scope mounts. My friend had a son who inherited them, and probably sold them for a song. jd

they come up on Gunsinternational quite a bit. some of them are works of art for sure.

Hmmmmmmmmm, you mean like my custom Sharps Borchardts with big Unertls atop them?
One is a 25-35, and the other one is a 6.5x57 Rimmed. The last one is a Shiloh Sharps LRE in 45-100 shooting paper patched 530gr RN cast bullets.
I need to figure out how to post pictures here.

Howdy !

While I am still trying to scan some old pics to post, I'll include a couple from the mid -70s period... when I started transitioning from old school wood & blued vamint rifles to fiberglass and stainless-barrelled custom rifles.

Fred Sinclair pictured, holding a custom M-77 with a Hart .22BR
1-14 barrel, in a McMillan M-40 pattern camo stock.

Also shown, my first custom Sinclair rifle....
Wichita WBR 1375, Hart 24" SS 1-14 straight bull 1.375" chambered in my .22-35 Remingto wildcat; Bishop walnut walnut laminate stock. Circa 1977

With regards,

There was a magazine in the late 80s about long-range varmint hunting. I don't remember the name anymore but, it was a wonderful magazine. The thing I remember the most were pictures of guys' rifles on portable benches with extraordinarily tall scope mounts(?). I mean the scopes were way above the rifle. I think it was because in those days the scopes didn't have enough built in elevation.

Here is a model 70 I found that was a 6.5-308 Palma rifle Has a canjar set trigger. I’m not sure who made the stock. Now has Krieger 6br barrel.

Really wish cell phones with cameras would’ve been around back in the early 80s. Taking a picture back then had to be a well planned event especially if you were in the field. Wish I had pictures of lots of things from back in the day. Anyway, my first Varmint rig was a Remington 700 BDL heavy barrel in 222 with a 15 power Unertl ultra varmint scope. I remember the gun being accurate and killing a good number of woodchucks with it. But I also remember my shooting buddy bought the same gun I did in 22–250 and I could see the authority on the target and effective range was much more than my 222. Decided to go one up and went with a 220 swift in a Ruger number 1 HV with that same Unertl scope. I really wish I had some pictures of those two seeing how I don’t have either one of them anymore, but wish I did. I have been using a Cooper model 22 Phoenix in 220 Swift for years.

Howdy!

Were you thinking of " Varmint Hunter " magazine ?

My dad had a pre64 Model 70, originally was his dads 30-06, he had rebarreled and made into a 220 Swift that had a Unertl on it. Unfortunately a POS stole it out of his truck in the mid 70's so all I have is the memory of the kid version of me thinking it was about the coolest looking thing I'd ever seen.

Rifles like that tend to hold a special place in our minds because even in his mid 80's with somewhat advanced dementia my dad still remembers and talks about that particular rifle like no other he's ever had. Wish I at least had a picture of it but if I did it would probably just make me mad knowing some low life stole it.

I remember when I thought of an "antiquated" rifle as being over 30 or 40 years old. I have several varmint rifles I bought new back in the late 70's or early 80's that I think of as good as any "modern" rifle. Optics are another story....

I didn’t have a digital camera in the Old Days so I don’t have pictures that I wish I would have, but my long range varmint rig in the 70s was a Remington 700 BDL Varminter , floated barrel and glassed bedded action and a Unertel 20x Scope.
