old sako 6ppc

i guys my main rifle i use day in day out is an old sako 75 6ppc,this gun i use for fox shooting and vermin so around half inch or just under at 100 yards is easily good enough for me,its loads easy, shoots brilliant with no pressure signs or any thing, all i want to ask is the barrel has seen some action now and is there any thing i can do to just get some better accuracy with out a re-barrel,just thought you lads mite know of any ideas, i use a 58 grain v.max with 29.5 grains of vit 133 kissing the lands.cheers simon..

simon6ppc: The 58 gr. V-Max has proven to be very accurate in my 6ppc's also. Read an article in Precision Shooting in '98 or '99 advising how good they were, tried them and the writer was correct.

A few things to try: 1/ seat bullet out further to allow for throat erosion 2/ if #1 does not work, try 65 gr. V-max or a heavier bullet </= 75 gr. that has a longer bearing surface 3/ try H-322 powder with light to mid charge weights as listed in the load manuals. N-133 is more problematic with keeping tune ...especially when RH drops below 30%.

lh smith ,can you better explain why n133 goes out of tune with low humidity please. My curiosity is getting the best of me.

No. I offer no concrete explanation. My experience with it after 32 lbs of use......to coin a notable Texas BR shooter's phrase : "It simply acts "goofy" below 30% RH."
Many competitors who use N133 have a digital humidity/ temp monitor on their load box...........when the RH nears 35% they switch to another powder(s). Jack Neary ( a spokesman for Vihta-vouri and World Team member) mentions this phenomena in his 6 part series on " rifle tuning" on You-tube. It has also been mentioned ad nauseum in numerous posts on Benchrest Central.

I have asked the question about n133 more than care to remember. I have come to a conclusion that the coating on n133 collects moisture or reacts to moisture more than other powders. I have never had any success with it, but a lot of people do. It does vary from lot to lot on burn rate and most of the people I know who use it have a lot of the same. I am bewildered by the confidence the purple power gives but it wins a lot. Good luck getting any this season. When its humid the folks can make it hammer. It has less success here in the west. I doubt I will ever shoot it again, but never say never.
