Old Rifle what is it and whats it worth?
ELG stamped on it. Octagon Barrel.
22 caliber.

Looks like some sort of rolling block rimfire. Is it .22 cal?
ELG is a proof mark from Liege, Belgum.

Looks like a Belgum gallery gun. Probably not worth a lot.

They're only good for shorts or CB caps. They were called "Parlor rifles" because people would set up a target in their parlor (e.g. in the fireplace) and practice shooting at home.

I have something like that. I was told by 2 different guys that it's a wall hanger. It's a 25 cal rimfire.

Does it actually say "22 LR" on the barrel some place or does it just happen that a 22 LR fits in the chamber? Shooting a .22 LR in a Flobert Parlor Gun could be dangerous. Is it .22 or .25 cal?

The Rifle belongs to a friend I'll have to see the markings myself to answer your questions.
Sounds like a gallery gun. probably not safe to shoot given its age.

I don't know what it is except I have its twin in better shape. Mine has no markings on it at all.

It's likely not .22 but a 4 mm. Look under the muzzle to see if there is a number. If the chamber/bore is half way decent should be OK to shoot, these are low pressure guns.

Before you or your friend make a decision on whether to shoot it or not, have a qualified gunsmith check it out. This style rifle was produced to chamber several different calibers and you need to be absolutely certain that you have the proper modern day ammunition for it before you pull the trigger. It may be a .22 LR, maybe not.The .22 LR came on the scene just prior to 1890 and at the time there were a number of small caliber rifles competing for the market. Be careful ..................

There was a guy lugging one around at a Lebanon, NH gun show a few weeks back. One vendor said he thought it was a 4 mm. I would suggest you slug the bore and do a chamber cast.

I'm going to dig mine out again. It's been a few years since I looked at it. I remember that mine had been altered or rechambered at one time because the barrel was worked on and restamped by "some company" in Ilion, NY. Now I'm curious. The gun came from my Grandfather, where I got the collector bug too.

In bygone years it was not uncommon to have a barrel relined, at which time it could be remade as a different caliber.
