Old primer question.....

I have been pulling some old reloads my father had purchased in 1990-1991... The brass was junk , he bought them at a gun show loaded to 5.56 specs... I pulled all 900 bullets and was thinking of keeping the primers also... The powder I tossed and the brass will be recycled....

My question is and this might be asking way to much.....

Anyone remember or can give me an idea what primers back then we're silver with yellow priming mix in them..? You would think CCI or Federal.... Not even sure if they are regular or Magnum... Thought they might be worth keeping for rainy days...

Keep in mind that 30 years later the powder was ok , the ammo shot ok , I fired about 5 over a crono before I realized they were reloads.... They were HOT and the brass sucked so bad it would split the necks on 1 out 5 or so , it looked like the sizing die they used was in horrible shape.... Worse case I dig a hole and plant all 900 primed cases... The bullets were all I wanted...

Ive had some of the old white box winchesters- pre blue box- that had like a clear yellow lacquer on the anvil but not drenched over it. Dont expect br grade accuracy from them after pushing that anvil down so it really dont matter what they are if they go off. Dont use them for any life and death situation for sure

I have some vintage 1996-7 Winchester WSR's that have the nickel /silver cup but the primer compound is definitely green. Winchester switched to the brass cup sometime after that, at least for WSR's.

Edit: These were from the white box as well.

I would expect the primers to be functional, however as mentioned, they might not exhibit the same consistency due to the seating and removal step. But how would you intend to store 900 primers? Don't store them in bulk. The container is specifically designed to store them safely. Without that protection, if 1 goes, they all will go.

Yup, I think I will just bury them..... I just wanted at least the bullets for rainy days.... Like most of you I have enough to last.... Not to sound bad but primers are the only thing I try and be safe with... Modern powder is completely safe...

Lol this is exactly correct , just ask a friend of mind that dropped a smoke in a dish of 1000 primers... There's still anvils in his roof... And why I told him to just buy cheap factory ammo....
