A vendor at a local show has an Anschutz 22 for sale. On guy thinks its a 64 the other thinks its a 54. Medium contour barrel in an after market wood stock. It has a wing style safety and that's the puzzling part. I can't find diddly about this rifle. Its also single shot. Its not minty but isn't hammered either. Other than filthy, the bore looks OK with the eyeball. What the heck is it? And whats it worth?

Just saw a post under this one. Looks like it may be a 54.

Snap a photo of the action and it will be no problem to identify if it's a 54. Or... go to Rimfire Central and look under the Anschutz section and you can learn a lot quickly. If it has a wing safety I "think" it has to be a 54.

He wants $400 for it. I'm not sure if that's a decent price or not. Its going to need soe=me spit and polish for sure.

Looks similar but not near as nice. Lever all the way right, won't fire. Straight up, won't fire. All the way over left and it will fire.

Forget the spit and polish for now, a few stock scratches/dings etc give old firearms character, we all get old with age and pick up a few dings alone the road of life.

The important parts are the chamber/barrel/muzzle end, check if they look ok and are not damaged; similarly check if the bold serial number matches the action serial number (last three numbers). If the bolt was replaced then numbers will not match up but if the bolt is form a similar rifle or was not stamped and the head space was set correctly then there should be no issues.

If it’s a 54 action (even a 54 sporter) GRAB it NOW, 400 bucks is as cheap as chips.

Top end 54 triggers (5018) can go north of 500, some stocks can go for 500+ odd, an original Anschutz sight will set you back 350/400 depending upon rarity/seller, etc….

The parts are worth more than the whole, I would grab it without even shooting it, if your dealer has a range, put a 50 spot on deposit to hold until you test fire it.

Just me tuppence worth, best of luck.

I'll go back tomorrow and look at it more. I do remember the trigger resembling an old Mauser trigger, lots of take up and pretty heavy. The dealer said he fired it and it functioned but didn't have a scope or sight so no idea of accuracy.

The 54 has a cocking indicator or a small rod sticking out of the back center of the bolt when it is cocked, the 64 doesn't.

There are more annie actions than model 54 and 64. Prior to the 64 Anschutz made what are referred to as flobert 1,2, and 3 actions which are very similar to a 64 action. The only way to tell a flobert from a 64 is the length of the ejection port. Also repair parts for old annies are hard to come by. And very pricy when one can find them.

If the barrel is marked savage/anschutz it was imported by savage between 1963 and 1981. On the left side of the barrel there should be an antler proof mark to the right of that there is a date code, sometimes letters but if it is 2 numbers they are the last 2 numbers of the year the barrel was proofed. There is also a 4 number code on the left side of the reciever that tells what model the reciever left the factory as example 14xx,15xx up to 20xx.

At a gun show it's very unlikely the seller doesn't know what he has.
A private seller could be selling the target rifle his dad or granddad had growing up in which case he may not know what it is.

2 pieces of advice that were given to me. The first is never buy a target rifle because target shooters shoot them every free moment.
The second is if a deal sounds too good to be true it probably isn't true.

The only anschutz that I know the sale price on was a Savage/Anschutz for 500 that went up to 600 while I was standing there, yes the seller raisied the price in the middle of the deal.

The OP's characterization of the barrel being a "medium" contour seems to preclude the Match 54 single shots as they will have what are usually thought of as "heavy" contours of 22mm (.866 inches) or 24mm (.945 inches). Of course the description may be reconsidered.

A "medium" contour suggests a non-Match 54 model. The 54 sporters are repeaters.

Below are some Anschutz actions, some of which may be on a single shot.

I've seen the dealer at a few shows in the last couple of years. He's young and only been a dealer for a short time. Not knowing doesn't surprise me as he deals in mostly new stuff. I do know its not a Savage Anschutz, my friend has one of those and it doesn't look anything like it.. I can't point fingers at the dealer, I have no clue what it is either.

From what I know, only the 54 actions had wing safties. Savage imported many types of anschutz rifles, so looking the same as your one sample doesn't mean anything, but if it will say Savage then Anschutz if its an anschutz made rifle imported by savage. There are sporter 54s and target 54s but all share the same action. You can find pictures of all types of 54s from the 60s and 70s on the internet, look at those then compare to what you see at the shop, its not rocket science

I went back and looked again and talked with a few people. It did have several eagle proof marks on it. It also had scope mounts D&T in the action and the bolt handle was ground on to the clear the scope. Also looks like a disc grinder was used for the job. Just way to rough for me to invest in so I passed. But thanks to all of you that tried to help me out. Maybe if he has it the next show one of us may know more about it or he won't be so proud of it.
