I wanted to thank everyone for their input a while back to my original post. I just wanted to give an update...
I ended up buying a Winchester M70 in .308 and topping it off with a Leupold VX II in 2x7. I wanted a VXIII in 1.75x6 but couldnt' find one in stock at the local shops and it wouldn't have arrived in time for the class. I put a ching sling on it and headed to the class.
It's been 5 weeks since the class but I think about what we did there almost daily. I did end up shooting right handed the entire class without a hitch.
I can't say enough about the class and the instructor, Randy Cain. Although this was my first class and didn't really know what to expect, I feel that it was top notch. We ended up shooting just over 400 rounds in 3 full days from all the field positions and some tactical work close in with the bolt action. We even did some drills partnered up and shooting/reloading covering each other while moving to different positions. I really learned how to shoot quickly, running the bolt, keeping my cheek weld and acquiring the target for follow ups and reload quickly while watching the target, not the magazine.
The instructor recommended that I get the stock on my rifle cut down to fit me better. He said that would make a decent amount of difference in keeping the butt in the pocket of my shoulder/staying behind the rifle and grabbing the bolt without having to reach so much and lifting my cheek off the stock. So, I guess it starts...tinkering. Although, I think I'll let someone who knows what they are doing cut my stock. I don't really have the tools to make the straight cut anyway. And, now I guess I'll have to start re-loading for rifle cases...what else would I do with over 400 empty cases?
Thanks again for all the input.
