My thanks to the gents over at BRC who have provided input about fluting. Ok, now to expound on that and ask "Should I build a fluted barrel based on this contour and weight, and be able to expect 5 shot cloverleaf groups? You guys have all probably seen and fired a Remington barrel contour like this known as a Remington VSF, VSSF, Sendero, Varmint, Police rifle, etc. This one is a 26" long 308 VSF. The dimensions are .820" at the muzzle, .950" at the right end of the barrel (miked just on the right end of the fluting), and .875" in the middle of the barrel. It weighs exactly 3 1/2" lbs. Keep in mind that many of these police contour barrels are heavier because they are solid without fluting. This one's got the fluting and weighs only 3.5 lbs!
Excluding all other factors concerning gunsmithing, handloads, my shooting skills, etc......
If I instruct a quality barrel maker to produce an exact duplicate barrel contour like this for me in a 6.5 Creedmoor, will it be stable and heavy enough to produce groups in the 3's ? The rifle will be allowed to cool down after 5 shots. I'm trying to make an accurate 6.5 Creedmoor police style rifle that is not too heavy to carry, but more stable then the typical contour of an ADL/ BDL sporter barrel.
