Officially addicted to 1000 yards.

Just so happened that it was on my b-day that my son and four other buddies all took a long roadtrip out to Rayners Range in eastern ohio.
I had never shot at that distance as there really is not a place here locally or within 100 miles or so to do it.
Let me just say it was probably the funnest b-day I have ever had in my life.
Not only just the shooting but, the views and friends I had with me made for one fantastic day.
I was very comfortable shooting at that distance although 1000 yards is quite a distance.
You really had to watch the wind flags thats for sure especially out past 600+.

My son and I took are .308 and a 6.5cm which neither had problems whacking the gong at 1000 repeatedly.
Although I quickly found out I need 20moa bases (15 moa at least) on both rifle as I ran out of scope on both at 1000. Luckily I was within the reticle holds and used those for the difference needed.

Im sure most fellas on here have shot out to a 1000 but, if you haven't dont do it. You will want to keep doing it. :)
Here are a couple pictures at 600 yards. To do 1000 you go around and to the top of the hill behind where you where then shoot back over the 600 area (gotta close that area of if you going to shoot over top of it). If you zoom in you can see the 600 gongs at the top of the hill in the cleared area.

I also wanted to give out a shout to the Rayners. Super friendly gent with a nice well kept range to shoot at being very affordable as well.

Congratulations on your losing your 1000 yd cherry . I don't know how long you've been aching to break that barrier, but it's been a 2 1/2 year quest for me, and I only did it for the first time this spring using a 6mmBR that I built from parts bought here and another similar site.

I am lucky to have two excellent ranges nearby, and use them weekly. My son and I went to the 1000 yd range just this past Sunday. He did an excellent job breaking clays at 500 yds with his Savage 12FV in 223 shooting a 53 gr V-max. Then he picked up my 6BR and started banging steel at 1000 yds shooting a 105 A-Max, something I haven't even been able to do yet. That kid's got some good eyes, not to mention trigger skills!

Really makes a father feel proud, doesn't it?! :)

Don't know if you are aware of it but Tom Sarver has a place close to there called Thunder Valley Precision. I know he has steels out to at least one mile and I believe he has them even beyond that for the big stuff. I'd bet you could touch the mile target with that 6.5 CM.
He is building one for me right now and I can't wait to be able to say I hit something at a mile. It may take me a hundred rounds but my intentions are set. I'm going to hit that sucker. :D Have a great day and happy birthday!!!

Thanks David and Milo.

4xforfun that was a funny video. "If you say 1000 one more time Im going to kick you in the junk" LOL

Was able to find where my son put all the pictures on my laptop and thought I would share what I think is a neat one. This is at 1000 looking over the top (down in valley) of where the other previous shared photos where taken. Click on picture to see well. My son took all these on 4k video camera.

Rayner's Rocks...My Pa. shooting Buddy has been all over that place for years...Now You Ohio Dudes have to come East To Ridgway Rifle Club..850 to 1000 yds ...That is the VBRS Varmint Benchrest silhouette match, first Sunday of the month ...It Is The Most Fun A Man Can Have, Sitting Down, With his Pants On...Mike in Ct

I started shooting long range a couple of months ago. I had similar experience on my local 1000 yard range. Now I just leave my scope on my 1000 D.O.P.E. and call it good. :D

If you're enjoying that and dont mind a little travelling, you should check out Ridgeway Rifle Club's (In PA) Varmint Bench rest shoots. At each distance (850 - crows, 900 - ground hog, 950 - bobcat, 1000 coyote) they setup critters for you to shoot at in a match format. Absolutely tons of fun, and if you think you're hooked now it's only to get worse. Unlimited sighters, and 10 for record at each distance. I think there is one more match left this year.

I have 30,15,10 inch round and 5wx8h inch steel at 1,030 yards on the farm and it is really really fun ,,I also have 18,12 and 6 inch round at 600 and I have taken a bunch of friends over too shoot that freak out at how far the 600 plates are then really freak out when I tell them that those are the 600 and the 1,030s are on the hill behind them,,LOL

I have put my match sights on my PRS type rifle and when I have someone that knows how to spot and give me good info I can get on the 10 inch plate at 1,030 with the PNW/Mo`s sights with a .5 diopter ,,off a bipod and a rear bag the best I have done so far with the sights is 5 in a row on the 10 inch plate shooting the 130 VLD from a 6.5x47,,

if I had a camera system that would work at 1,000 yards I would shoot with the sights all the time,,if you dont have a good spotter you are wasting your bullets,,

I can spot my own with a scope and that is really fun but to me shooting is a lot more fun with friends than by yourself or in a match even,,

That's understandable enough. What we do is get a group of us together to shoot the matches. Once youve gone there. You'll be bringing friends haha. It's a blast.

Thanks for the correction! Two left. It's severely addicting. I just ordered parts to build a light gun for next year!
