That's a fact Jack! I've ridden Cannondale bicycles for years, they are art. Only frame I'd put above them is my Merlin Titanium road bike.

I've had both the KX & CR500's and yes they are a hoot ! It comes down to manageable power and I think a 500cc 2 stroke doesn't have it, peak top end power isn't able to be applied to the ground. That's how the 4 strokes took over motocross/supercross. I have a KTM EXC530(4 stroke, ~250lbs) that has gentle roll on power but when you open it up you'd best be pointed in the right direction because you will get there fast. My other bike is an KTM SMR525 bored & stoked to 580cc super moto(basically a dirt bike slightly lowered, stiffer suspension, smaller rims, and slicks instead of dirt tires). With slicks you can put the power to the ground, so much so that we started pulling spokes out of the rims and hubs and evolved to billet hubs, thicker spokes, and stronger, wider rims. There were a couple 500cc 2 strokes but not as competitive because of the power band, but still looked like a hell of a fun time !

Around 2016 my Son smelled VP Race fuel and premium 2T oil for the first time. As a result my custom rifles have become safe queens and I'v been through Three YZ 125's one KTM 125 SX one YZ 250F countless gallons of VP $$$$? in suspension and memories that will last a life time. Two strokes are alive and growing, they get kids started and stay on them racing right through their late teens. The pros are even running dream races and shootouts on them. 125 B or schoolboy is by far my favorite class to watch.

In 1976 I had a Penton 125, I doubt it made over 16 hp. I weighed 185 lbs. If this 500 has the claimed 92hp. It would be suicidal. The biggest things that are different from when I had bikes, water cooled added a lot of hp and my bikes has 3 inches front travel and 2.5 rear travel.

Back in the day I had a Husqvarna 250WR that I bought brand new in 1977. Something like $1700, a fortune back then. More than once I found myself on the back wheel without even trying!

At 52 years old I own a KTM 250SX. 2 stroke. The throttle goes from idle to hospital in a half inch. Gotta love the "ring dingers". If you run a 2 stroke you know what I mean.

I miss my 250 Yamaha Enduro from 1972. It was a handful. With a GYT Kit, it was loud!! Ran many a race with that baby and never had a lick of trouble with it. Trouble was, I got too big for my pants and she knocked me down a few notches. I ended up with a dislocated shoulder, broken collar bone, sprained wrists and sprained ankles. Didn't work for 1 month. Shoulder still bothers me to this day.

Cannondale dirt bikes are one of the dirt bike worlds most memorable disasters. This bike gave substance to the term "Cannon-whale". Just say slow heavy and ill handling.

I couldn't even imagine a 500cc two stroke with 92 hp weighing 197 lbs.
In 2004 I had a 1990 YZ490, shredded both ACL's in a crash, took 4.5 months to heal up and I had to get back on it one last time before I sold it, it was a beast.
Now I have fun with a 2003 XR400R, much more manageable.

Even the smaller 2 strokes had plenty of snort. I grew up riding bikes and sleds. In my late 30’s I was picking up my sons from some friends farm. They had just gotten their sons an RM100. The kids asked if I wanted to ride it. Hell yah! Scootin, slidin and wheelies down the field road. It had been 20 years since I had switched to road bikes. The 2 stroke sleds were always fun also. When my youngest son got his first 4 stroke sled though, that was an entirely different animal. 1000cc turbo that he added aftermarket exhaust and programming box putting out close to 260hp. No more engine whine and high rpm powerband. I took it across the lake and was amazed. 1/8” of throttle and was already over 70mph. When I got back, I told him that he was going to get hurt.

I am still kicking myself for not buying a road legal CR500 back in 2000. What a weapon!

Note, this is in Australia. I don't know if they produced a road legal CR 5's for other countries.

I still have an XR400R HRC kitted bike from that era. Will never part with it. Reliable as an axe.

I've seen more broken collar bones in a weekend of trails than a lifetime of MX, scored 3 dads in one weekend on my ttr80(I think...it was a yz80 trilas bike), peppy as hell.

I quit riding dirt bike long ago,Hodaka was my last bike . Had some cool bikes coming out back then,nothing like the Cannondale though .

This is my farm bike. I traded a weed eater for it. I’m pretty sure he got the better deal. Lol This thing needed everything.
I’ve had a cpl different bikes. My favorite was a 89 KTM MX250. Only thing I never got used to was the left side kick.
