The world's largest army? America's hunters

I don't spend my fall weekends tramping around the woods in pursuit of a buck, but a lot of my friends and neighbors do.

This blogger adds up all the hunters in just a handful of states, and comes to a striking conclusion:

The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed. That's great. There were over 600,000 hunters.



Allow me to restate that number. Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world - more men under arms than Iran ; more than France and Germany combined - deployed to the woods of a single American state to help keep the deer menace at bay.



But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who are in the woods of Pennsylvania this week. Michigan 's 700,000 hunters have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia , and it is literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.



The point? America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.

Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.

Amen brother! That's why the liberals want to slowly erode our second amendment rights. Take away the guns and they can do anything they want without anyone to stop them. Of course if we were invaded then the Liberal cowards would be sniveling for the gun owners to protect them untill the threat was over. Then it would be right back to disarming them "For thier own good" once again.

interesting statement, while firearm ownership is indeed very high in the US. most of them are unorganized, even if they did get together they might not be able to offer any kind of lasting resistance that can stand a chance against helicopter gunships and bombers.
im not saying the general population of the US won't be able to win (the taliban and iraqis didn't fare too badly all things considered), im just saying that the casualties would be impressive!

this also rests somewhat on the reasons behind the invasion. if the would be attackers show up with the intent to occupy america then i would say its a sure bet that they would lose, it would just take an incredible effort and time.

however if the attackers intent to completely destroy america and reduce the population to ash and history book entries then im afraid that all the ARs and 1911s in the world won't be able to save you.

I disagree with some of this, but it is true that while we have a high number of gun owners, few are trained in warfare or have enough ammo to really be a lasting resistance.

But again, I don't think it would be possible to invade the mainland US under any circumstances. There are just too many gun owners and our military would be backing us as well. I can't see bombers and helicopter gunships getting too far with our Air Force being what it is. We have more defenses than most other countries do, and our aircraft likely outnumber them quite heavily as well.

The only real threat we have of defeat is nuclear. If we were nuked a few times, it's over. Regular warfare, I think we are too strong as a whole to be defeated on our own soil. Especially when you consider that there are as many armed citizens as there are. Never mind hunters, how about all the competition shooters from all the disciplines that don't hunt? All the other hobby shooters as well? There have to be millions! That is just too many for anyone to just come over and try to defeat us. They will need to do it from afar to have any luck. Invasion is pointless. I just don't think it would work.

And if we were at war, I think many would find a way to organize themselves as well. Maybe not as well as an army, but I think we would do OK.

Yes living and hunting in Pa. all my life, we used to have 1 mil. hunters only 15 years ago, I believe numbers are down to 7-800,000 now. Numbers are also down on deer. IMHO I do believe there is collusion between Insurance companys and game commission to get numbers down. But It did not happen this year in NW corner of Pa. 3-4 feet of snow shut down 2nd week of the season, nobody hunted. Rest of state had hardly any snow.
