? Of range protocol

How would most ranges deal with a heavily medicated but legally prescribed person on or at firing line, even if not actually using a firearm,
This question of safety needs to be thought about, as many of the, me or you become older and are aware that someone next to you may be unsafe, to me there is only 1 acceptable answer, no tolerances should be made. Just curious on other ranges opinions ? Thanks

Seems like a question for the RO on a case by case basis. Anyone with Parkinsons or some physical disability can be mentally fine but look 'out of it'. I have permanent spine issues that make me look 'off' but I still compete and am completely safe. At our local range, there are no ROs so we are self regulating. Club has rules that we all adhere to and enforce (politely). If someone seems like they need watching, one of us keeps an eye out from nearby just to sure all is well.

If anyone has visibly impaired motor skills or judgment they shouldn't be allowed near the line. I would call it to the attention of the Range Officer. It's really the RO's call.

Range officer call. That's his job. Depending on how Impaired he is I would have to call 911. If his motor Skills and judgment was that bad he shouldn't be driving. If the RSO removes him from the range. And lets him to drive. then what
My gut feeling is 911 should be involved. You don't need a gun to kill.
The protocol on that situation should of ben addressed in RSO training. A simple 911 call would take You the RSO and the club out of the picture. Larry

Thanks for the opinions, no names mentioned but our club has recently had a club member become disoriented at main line, not responding to RSO line calls, my main concern is safety of others, at what point does a fuctional narcotics pain user become a liability.

If someone is using a narcotic, regardless of the circumstances, they have absolutely no business on the firing line. Sorry, but I didn't survive twenty six years in the Army just to get popped at the range because someone was on narcotics, legal or not.

I had a guy next to me a few years ago that shook so bad I couldn't figure out how he was going to keep all shoots in the berm ( it is huge ). I decided to keep my mouth shut for a while and watch. When we went cold to check targets I asked if he wanted me to bring his target back or post a new one. He handed me his new target and off I went. He had shot 5 shot groups and all were in the 2s and a few in the 1s. I found out later it had been his wish to have one very accurate rifle before he died. He shot a few more times and I didn't see him anymore. I found out he had had a bad problem with his ears and wouldn't be shooting anymore. Through a round about weird bunch of communication I would up buying his rifle for just what he had paid for it. I wound up with a Hall in 6ppc with an almost new Kreiger barrel. Mikey I hope you are well and thanks for the rifle! Looks can be deceiving just watch and if it looks like it is going to be bad don't let anyone get hurt. I find I have come closer to getting hurt from some know it all commando trying to impress some kid or girl. So watch us all, anyone can make a mistake, I would rather have someone embarrass me at the range than hurt someone.

So do you want to lock all us broken old folks up somewhere so you'll be safe?

I'm not on your side on this one as I'm a medicated Competitor and RSO and I watch the Ready Line and beyond because that's where stupid meets Murphy most of the time.

No, I don't want to lock anyone up ........... unless they deserve it:) But I have to stand by my comment. There are always exceptions to everything but let's be honest here. We are talking about the person who is taking some drug(s) illegally or a person on a narcotic pain killer and those folks don't belong on a public range firing line. I just turned 68 and have beat my body up pretty well over the years but there are just too many drugs that should not be mixed with public shooting ranges. It's hard enough to keep alert for some young guy who thinks he is Rambo. Not all ranges have RSO's and self awareness is fine but we don't need anymore preventable accidents. I say that both functionally as well as politically. In any regard, be safe and enjoy life my friend.

Heavily medicated does not describe impairment.

This is the safety issue. A person does NOT have to be taking a narcotic medication to become disoriented and non responsive to commands. I've seen this behavior (at work) with a diabetic who wasn't properly taking his meds.

Unsafe is unsafe. Diplomacy is called for, obviously, but lives are in the line.

Every person who's been through the painful process of "revoking" an elderly parent's driving privileges can relate.

If doped up enough that it’s obvious, then the prescribing MD would very much like to hear about it. Opioids taken as prescribed by an MD that wasn’t lied to, merely reduce the level of pain experienced by long term suffers of severe chronic pain. They’ll feel less terrible, there is no “buzz”, the effectiveness never ever lasts until it’s time for the next dose, and there’s no such thing as a “pain killer”, unless maybe if you were to kill the patient...
