OCW Test

Are you shooting from a bipod, sand bags or front rest? Table or ground? Muzzle brake? I love the rum and these groups at 100 are not optimal. Retumbo is great but r33 and h1000 are my favs.

I do tests at 300 for the rum. 100 always seemed way to close for me.

Why .020 off lands?

Front rest and rear bag from a bench and yes does have a Borden MB
.020 is what Dan suggest as a starting depth in the OCW testing, so I went with it :)

I would definitely shoot at 300, but that is an ongoing argument. Very hard to see any vertical changes at 100, especially with a rum. Either way, I look forward to seeing future data from you

Thanks for asking

Funny factory Nosler load at 100 yards is roughly 1/2 MOA and I'm in no way a top notch shooter but I've taken a fair amount of deer, elk and speed goats in the last 30 years, my sheep is coming soon.

Just tossing this out there. But I would chronograph that factory ammo. Then using what ever powders you want to try, attempt to use a charge weight that will get you in the same velocity range. Shooting a large number of magnum rounds can induce flinching. So getting closer in velocity to the factory ammo should get you in the ball park of a good accuracy node.

Today I tried H4350 in my Creedmoor in order to get better velocity than Varget was giving me. Well it did not shoot for crap until I was back down near the velocity Varget was giving me. Not sure why I thought this might be relevant. My mind just wonders some times.

The two together and one out group pisses me off every time. Causes great confusion. I always wonder if I pulled the flyer. I have learned that the flyer is more likely a function of an imperfect load. You never know without shooting it some more. Unlimited time and a range in my backyard would be very helpful.

I would also recommend a 300 yard ladder. You can learn what you need to know in a bout 7 shots. You shot a lot of ammo in that test and I assume this is a hunting rifle, so about 3-5 shots is all you should take before allowing that barrel to cool with a rum.

Hello All,

I though I'd share an update, for anyone that cares :)
I changed my powder measuring practice and did come up with much much better result.
Prior I was kind of using two scales, one a Ohaus 311 Cent-O-Gram beam and another Gem Pro 250.
Of course I was getting different reading with that, I was not getting consistent charge weights.
This is what I'd do. Place powder on my Ohaus and then double check with my Gem Pro and all of the time having to take off powder when getting the second reading from the Gem Pro. Every now then I'd get the two to match.
The Gem Pro drove me nuts and I would constantly have to "tare" the scale back to zero and was just not confident using it, so I shit can that!!
I'm now using just the beam scale and I'm really happy with the result. I went out and got a webcam and downloaded an app for my Mac that I can now see the beam full screen and tell you it was well worth $100 for these aging eyes.
Anyway that's my gig and seems to be the right approach.
Here's my out come @ 200 yards

So that was the 90 gr load? How did the others do? Looks like you have pretty much figured things out.

I have an electronic scale as well and had the same results when I tried to check my balance beam and electronic against each other. I have gone back to balance beam scales. I have two that I check for agreement on a regular basis just to make sure nothing has changed. I have a webcam for the scale as well and that really does help aging eyes.

Glad you got things sorted out, now you can have some fun!

Thanks
Yes that is the 90 gr.
All grouped pretty good but the 90 seemed to be best and ran about 3125 +/-
Max load according to "Nosler Data" is 91.5. Funny doing some research, most guys swear the golden ticket is a 95 gr. , same Nosler components with Retumbo powder and their pushing roughly 3200. I think if I tried to run that, I'd be in for some major pressure issues.
In the begging stages I did try just over max at 91.7 and got a pretty good group. For the hell of it, I'm going to try it again with a bullet seating change and see what comes. My rifle seems to like .015 off the rifling.
All in all I'm pretty happy with 90.0

Happy hunting all!! I got a bull to chase in Nevada!!
