OAL with a 22 Hornet in a CZ 527

The CZ 527 requires me to load my 22 Hornet cartridges into the chamber through the clip. As a result, I need to watch my OAL. What bullets (manufacturer, weight, shape) are you using that allows you to load the gun without interference from the limited size of the clip?

I would try some Hornady 35 Grain V-max and see how they do. I don't have a CZ in 22 hornet but
the 35 gr. v-max is the bomb in my savage 22 hornet.:)

I keep hearing about folks having problems single loading their 527s but I’ve been doing for years with my .223 Varmint. I had a pm conversation a while back with a gentleman who admitted that he was scared to try it because he had been told that it could cause damage to his rifle. He went so far as to call CZ USA about his concerns and was assured that it would do no harm. After trying it, he said that it worked fine for his rifle as well. I’m not sure if you’re hornet is any different than a .223 but that’s my 2 cents fwiw.

I have handled 3 different 527s in .223 Rem and they all worked fine when fed through the ejection port instead of the box magazine. The claw extractor is thin and springy and its face has a bevel to move over the rim. You can hear it if snap over the rim if you operate the bolt slowly.

Furthermore, CZ will warranty any rifle for the original owner if you manage to break anything (though they might not be very quick about it).

Beyond that I'm afraid I can't help regarding .22 hornet in the 527.

The reason I am writing is that, like those who have the 527 in 223, I have a 527 in a 222 Remington. I have no problem loading cartridges directly into the chamber with that rifle. I find it difficult, if not impossible to load the 22 Hornet the same way. I have a call into CZ to learn what can be done.
What I have been doing is loading the 22 Hornet with various bullets, checking each to be certain they will pass through the clip. What I have found is that I can load an individual cartridge with an OAL slightly greater than the limited length of the clip. I can squeeze the longer cartridge into the rifle without any real difficulty, but it is a pain to have to load each one singly, and then have to remove the clip to load the next one. I am caught between the desire to have a greater OAL, and the limitation of the clip. If I can load directly into the chamber, that solves the problem. Right now it appears I cannot do that, so I am looking for bullets that might work well with the limited OAL.

James Calhoon makes a single-shot follower for the 527 .22 Hornet. I have one for a .204 and it works like a charm.
As for OAL, am thinking my Hornet rounds with Speer 45 gr. SPs will go to 1.725" and still clear the 527 mag box; accuracy there is real good and I've never considered running them any longer.
PS: Might try the small-cal./CZ guys over on www.saubier.com
